periodic Dual-link display problem with new adapter

I don't yet know what conditions cause it but I'll be working with my MacBook Pro connected to my 30" display when the screen "shifts" and then becomes practically unreadable. I have to disconnect the adapter and reattach it. The photos below show a detail of the problem and then how it looks after reconnecting the adapter.

Here are two movies showing the problem.

This is exactly the same and new problem for me. I have never seen that before but now with 10.6
Now I am waiting for Apple customer service to OK replacing my frimware 1.01 adaptor because Apple sales will not open a package to see what they have. The asked if I would drive for 2 hours to an Apple store and do it there.. This is a royal pain as I have been dealing with this for 9 months!

Well I've had the problem since getting my MacBook Pro 17" Unibody in April. Yesterday, after reading here, I decided to see if I could get an exchange of the adaptor in hopes of getting one with the Firmware 1.0.2 update. The Genius immediately knew about this problem and offered to switch it out with hardly a passing comment by me. He was not enthusiastic that this would solve the problem and could not verify that the new adaptor was 1.0.2. But he wished me luck and sent me on my way. It turned out to indeed be Firmware 1.0.2. I installed and with Snow Leopard I went all day today with no hint of the problem. Everything worked as it should. So one day down, I'll followup if (when?!) the problem returns. Keeping fingers crossed....

Yes I had to take the old adaptor. I did take my MacBook but didn't need it. I had prepared an entire 3 minute movie of the problem with my iPhone in case the Genius had a case of reality distortion-still no need. They physically exchanged the adaptor with my old one, but again they didn't/couldn't know whether the new one was Firmware 1.0.2 so that was a risk.

The Genius I spoke to at first thought I could download the driver but relented easily. You can't right now.

I am at 1 and a half days with no problem yet, but I would still not be surprised if it resurfaced. I'll post again if/when the problem returns.

By the way, my monitor problem had continued when I upgraded to Snow Leopard with my old 1.0.1 Firmware adaptor. So if this turns out to be a lasting fix, it must be due to the new adaptor/firmware 1.0.2 combined with Snow Leopard. I have now made it through two full days of normal use with my 30" Dell monitor looking just beautiful. That is a record, so I am starting to get hopeful....

Thanks for the update. I would really like more than anything with regard to OS X for this to be resolved. And with Apple not publicly saying a word about it .. is just a sick feeling to be left in the dark about such things. Especially for the amount of monies invested in the equipment.

I hope to see next Friday you update with the same message of success 🙂

Here is an update. Apple support suggested I could get better results going to an Apple store. I resisted as it takes out a day. Finally I did today. Unfortunately though the staff Geniuses were doing their best. There was no 1.02 firmware adaptor in the store. They kindly gave me my money back. It was the second adaptor they had sent me. So I went home and ordered another by phone telling them I wanted 1.02. I was told they could not be sure. ( Apple if you are listening get rid of all of the 1.01 and relieve your misery.) I will continue to send back the adaptors until they have one that works.
I suggest we all do this so that we get what we paid for.

I went to Apple Store today. The best they were able to do was open one box. I had to show the genius how to use System Profiler to check the firmware version of the adapter. It seemed all new to him. Unfortunately, the firmware on the new adapter was v1.01. The assistant manager would not approve opening another package.

So I left with my old adapter. 12.4 mile round trip. Second trip to Apple Store about this adapter. This adapter is costing me much more than $99 in time and gas. I am going to get on the phone with Apple Care support this afternoon and try my luck there.

I went to my local store (Newton, MA) today and did an exchange. The box that the Genius opened luckily had an adapter with firmware version 1.02 so that was good.

I work in an office with a bunch of other people who also have the same problem. I left the guy in the store with the question "suppose we want to upgrade a dozen of these adapters, how would we organize that?" He's going to get back to me.

Apple recall the adaptors with the 1.01 firmware!
I got my third adaptor today along with testing a fourth at the Apple store on Saturday. All were duds with version 1.01 firmware.
So what Apple needs to do is make a system so that there is an identity on the box of what is inside including the firmware and date produced. That way the store employees do not need to open the box to determine if the goods are up to date.
As a result of this fault in systems we go round and round all of us who have the duds and Apple not knowing what is in the box.
I am sending back my third adaptor today which is actually the 4th to try.
Good luck Apple in pulling your head out of the sand!

I get my adapter from Apple Care via Fedex today. Hopefully I have as good as luck as everyone else here.

I had my adapter bug out on me twice this since Sunday. I figured out switching video cards, 9600M to 9400M will reset the display. Though this requires a logout, so I still have to close all my work, its faster than a reboot by a few seconds 😝

Almost a week with the new 1.0.2 adapter now and it is definitely a big improvement. I have had one instance where it had a couple of flashes of snow at connection. Otherwise it has been working as one would expect. I think the firmware update did it. If you haven't traded in your 1.0.1 for a 1.0.2 adapter, I strongly suggest you give it a go. Remember they may not be able to verify it IS 1.0.2 in the store. If things ever regress, I'll post again. Good luck to all!
