airport won't turn on

I have just recently not been able to turn on my airport wireless control. After clicking on the airport icon, "turn airport on" nothing happens. I have a small amount of my machine partitioned for XP. The XP side's wireless works just fine, but I can't seem to get the Mac side to work.

Any help?

I had the same problem. went to airport in menu and it said it wasn't installed.

fretted and worried, came to the forum, someone had said on another archived thread that they called apple genius and they walked them through these steps.
1. turn off mac book
2. remove battery and power cord.
3. hold down power button for 5 seconds
4. reconnect battery and power cord.
5. do parameter ram reset- hold down command + option P+Rpower button.
6. you should hear it chime, let go after chime and let it reboot
7. worked for me, hope it works for you.

IT WORKED!!!

( *airport won't turn on *)
After an hour on the phone with an apple tech and nothing! I found this discussion...
He had me try these things when we were trouble shooting but it didn't help. Maybe we didn't do them in the correct order???

This is exactly what I did using information from this Discussion

1. turn off mac book
2. remove battery and power cord.
3. hold down power button for 5-10 seconds
4. reconnect battery and power cord.
5. do parameter ram reset- HOLD DOWN command (apple key) + option PR - press power button.
6. you should hear it chime 3 (THREE) times, let go after 3rd chime and let it reboot

Then click the apple at the top left corner of the screen, select system preferences then click network, and up where it says location click on the box, then click edit locations, click the + and type a name for a new location which could be any name it doesn't mater, then click done. then go back in and click on the name you just typed, and click on APPLY at the bottom of the screen. After that it should turn on.

Good luck!

My MB Pro has been useless with the internet recently, if it connects at all, it gives up after a short while. It's been going downhill since the battery died - I usually have a max. of 10 minutes charge so am always wired to mains meaning the MB Pro gets hot quickly. Having reset the PRAM today, I cannot get online at all.

The problem is at home, at work and at my parents house where other PC's and Macs work - I am writing this on my new iMac at work, my parents old Dell connects at their house and my three housemates have no problems with their PC's at home. It's often easier to connect when close to the router (ie within 5 meters).

MB Pro details:

MacBook Pro 15" (September 2006)
2Ghz Intel Core Duo (1 processor, 2 cores)
L2 Cache - 2MB
Memory - 1GB
Bus Speed - 667 MHz
SMC Version - 1.2f10
2x 512 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz

AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86)
Firmware version - 1.4.4

Not really sure what else to put??

Hi,

Currently there has been a problem with my Airport Connectivity. I only have this problem everytime i connect my mini-display to HDMI converter. It stops the connection and i know for a fact that it is the mini-display adapter is the one thats causing it because I instantly get an internet connection once i unplug the adaptor. I didnt have this problem before.

31x32 (or anyone else) - did you ever solve the problem where you lost Airport connectivity as soon as you attached to a mini-display adapter? I'm having the exact same issue.

Wireless works fine until after I plug in the mini-display to HDMI adapter and then power on the HDMI switcher that the adapter goes into. As soon as I turn the switcher off (or switch to a different input), the Airport starts working again.

It's the craziest thing - I'm not sure why the video out would affect the Airport...

I'm trying some things that the HDMI switcher and adapter vendor (Monoprice) suggested, but not sure if that will help...

I have an early 2011 Unibody MacBook Pro. This same issue was happening to me, but no matter what I did -- PRAM reset, restart, etc. I couldn't get it to work.

I called apple, did an SMC Reset, and it works.

  • turn off your computer
  • unplug everything
  • SHIFT + CONTROL + OPTION + POWER for 5 Seconds (nothing will happen)
  • Turn the machine back on
  • Voila.

The standard, "remove the battery" SMC reset doesnt work on the unibody because...well...you can't remove the battery.

The apple adviser also mentioned this issue is typical if you use a docking station.
