Time machine - new user!

Question

Time machine - new user!

I have just had a new external hard drive for Christmas - smashing! And it backed up without any problem. But I notice that it is scheduled to do the next backup this morning and I wondered whether the computer needs to be switched on for it to do the back up as I had planned to go out and therefore switch the computer off. Any suggestions/comments would be very welcome. Thanks.

It won't backup while the computer is off or sleeping, but nothing is being changed on the hard drive then, so there is no need for it to do any backups. When you restart or wake the computer it will reschedule its backups.

New on time machine. I have a Fantom Drive 500 gb. linked to a 2 ghz power PC G5. the memory has 4 gb Ram. The time machine has been running two days (48 hours) and is three fourths complete. It is truely a time machine, and it takes forever time to back up. I will excuse the first time, but if it works this way backing up , it is one more paper weight. This cannot be right. Mr Slowski (Comcast TV ad) would love it.
