iTunes not recognizing blank CD when attempting to burn playlist

When I try to burn a playlist in iTunes it cannot recognize any blank CD-R discs. After choosing Burn iTunes then goes to the Burn Setting screen. I choose Music CD and then it asks me to insert a Blank CD. I can then hear the drive making some "reading" noise and after about 45 seconds it spits out the disc without even beginning to burn it. I have tried many different discs both TDK and Memorex and nothig works. Is there something wrong with the drive?

Thanks for the reply. I discovered some strange behaviors. I can burn a CD from iPhoto if I select individual photos but not if I choose to burn an Album. If I choose an album I get the same behavior as with trying to burn a music playlist. So, I went back to iTunes and instead of right-clicking on a Playlist and choosing "Burn Playlist to Disc" which is what I was doing, I selected each song in the main window and hit Burn. That worked! I guess the "Burn" only works if you highlight each song. Thanks for putting the idea in my head to try iPhoto.
