Canon MP620 wifi-problem on iMac

Hi,

Can't get my new MP620 to work properly using a wifi-connection to my iMac. Everything regarding the access point checks out. I'm even able to print test pages using the wifi-connection, however not standard printouts, i.e. from Office, web browser etc.

Anyone got a clue?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

First of all, when you added the printer queue, did you select More Printers > Canon IJ Network? The easiest way to tell is to open Print & Fax and look at the printer list. The MP620 should be displayed with its MAC address in brackets as part of the name.

If the queue has been correctly added, are you using the standard version of Canon Mac driver (v7.x) and not the Canon Mac CUPS (v10.x). The so-called CUPS driver doesn't work all that well.

Do you get the same problem with printing from TextEdit?

What happens when you print? Does the job just stay in the print queue or does it give an error? If it gives an error could you post the last 20 entries from the CUPS error log. You can get this via the MP620 printer queue > Printer > Log & History.

Thanks for helping PaHu,

Yes, and MAC-address is stated within brackets.

CUPS-driver was used. Changed to standard Canon Mac-driver (7.12.2) but the same type of error occured.

Do you get the same problem with printing from TextEdit?

Yes. Only printing of test pages (using wifi) works.

What happens when you print? Does the job just stay in the print queue or does >>it give an error? If it gives an error could you post the last 20 entries from >>the CUPS error log. You can get this via the MP620 printer queue > Printer > >>Log & History.

I get the following error message:

"Error Number : 306 A communication error has occurred. Make sure that the printer is plugged in, powered-on, and properly connected to your computer. Then try printing again."

Same error message every time.

Tried reinstalling both Canon software and printer settings a 4-5 times as recommended in some other MP620-threads here on the forum - no success so far though. It's possible to print test pages using wifi-connection after every reinstalling.

Since the CUPS driver was being used previously, I wonder if it is still causing problems with the v7 driver, as I don't believe you have a communication problem, even though the error suggests so.

I would reset the printing system, trash the contents of the ./Libary/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter folder and also trash the Canon CUPS v10.x package file located in ./Library/Receipts.

With this done run the v7 installer again and then add the printer via More Printers > Canon IJ Network.

Looked for that print log - but couldnt find it. The path your posted didnt point me in the right direction (no Log & History option availible).

Thanks,

My default Windows brain has difficulties adjusting to OS X.

However, no luck with trashing the CUPS-drivers etc. Same error. Test page printing still works.

Found the log though, lots and lots of 306:s but also some other posts as well:

Thanks for the log. I don't like the second entry about the DNS error. Are you able to ping the printer okay? Do you have any firewalls enabled that could be blocking the connection?

I've never looked into what protocol is being used by the Canon IJ Network utility. I assume it would be LPD but it could be a multicast protocol like Bonjour. If we knew it was LPD, we could create another queue and use a Gutenprint driver for test purposes.

I will look into this some more but with NYE only hours away I will probably not get a chance till Friday 2nd.

Happy New Year,

PaHu

Pinging works just fine, no active firewalls.

Printing protocols are a little bit out of my league.

Many thanks for your help PaHu, really appreciate your effort.

Happy New Year! (in about 21 hrs for us on CET-time)

Okay. Had some time to play with the Canon network software and found some interesting things.

First of all, I couldn't generate the same error that you are getting. So I am still none the wise as to why you are getting the connection error.

However, I did find that the v10 CUPS driver does provide you with another connection option and it would be ideal to try this.

At this stage, because I am not sure what you have installed, it would be ideal to start with a clean slate. So, delete the printers from the Printer list and then Ctrl-click on the list and select Reset.

Next, trash the following files;
./Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter > trash the entire contents
./Library/Receipts > trash both the MP620 series packages and the Canon IJ Network Tool
./Users/Shared > trash the Canon folder

With the above files deleted, empty the trash and restart the Mac. Also turn the printer off then back on after the Mac has restarted.

Run the MP620 v10.x CUPS installer to add the driver files. Restart when prompted.

Run the Canon IJ Network Tool v2.66 and restart when prompted.

Open Print & Fax, click to Add and select the Default browser view. After a couple of seconds, the 'Canon MP620 series (MAC address)' should appear in the list, with the Kind shown as 'canonijnetwork (CUPS)'. Note that you won't see the word CUPS until you resize the column.

When you select this entry, the Print Using menu should automatically change to 'Canon MP620 series'. Click Add to finish.

Now, cross your fingers and try printing. From what I have sees this connection uses a different protocol to the 'More Printers > Canon IJ Network' method, so I am curious to see if it generates the same 305 error.

Finally, I cannot see how you could be printing a test page from the Mac without the printer driver installed. Are you referring to the Test Print > Nozzle Check function available via the Maintenance tab of the Canon Network Utility. If no, then can you explain the procedure for how you get the test page to print?

Well this is becoming annoying. Since this other method didn't work then it does sound like there is some sort of network issue so the Ethernet test is a good idea. I was also thinking that you could try inserting a flash card into the MP620 and seeing if it mounts on the Desktop. There are some steps that are required to make this function. The included MP620 Help will give you details.

Let me know how you go.
