I just succeed in booting my Macintosh G4 with the Pioneer Dvr-x122. I am upgrading to Tiger, using the Tiger DVD. I'm not sure why it didn't boot yesterday, but I have added more RAM, so I think that is the reason.

Did I read correctly that you have a Mac Mini? I believe it has a built in DVD drive, so you should not need an external DVD drive.

But in answer to your question, yes, my Mac did boot from the Pioneer Dvr-x122. No additional software necessary.

Booting from a USB drive on an Intel-based Mac should not be a problem, though I think you'll need either the original install disk or a retail MacOS 10.4 or 10.5. Insert the installer in the drive and reboot the system while holding down the Option key (ALT if it's a Windows keyboard). That will take you to the boot loader screen. After a short while (probably 2-4 minutes) the DVD in the external drive should appear if the system can use it.

If the installer doesn't show up in the boot loader screen, then your system can't find it, or the drive or MacOS version is not compatible with your system for the purposes of booting.

Booting to an external USB drive on a G4 Mac (as the previous poster has done) is far more problematic, though it is supported on some models and with some versions of MacOS.
