exclamation mark in front of a song

what is the deal with an exclamation mark in front of a song I downloaded. I have a bunch of songs that I downloaded to my iTunes and they played at one time but now they have the exclamation mark in front of them and when I try to play them they say that "the song could be used because the original file could not be found"?

An exclamation mark in front of a song means that iTunes can't locate the song file, it may have been moved, deleted or had it's file name changed. All changes to songs (song title, artist etc.) have to be made within iTunes (right click, choose Get Info). Have you made any sort of changes to the detail or location of these songs outside of iTunes?
