New CURVED keyboards for BOTH 17" and 15" MBP ?!

It looks like the keyboard on the 17" is changed - and the keys are no longer flat (as they currently are on all models, and the external keyboards), but slightly curved.. ?!!

What's more, Apple seems to have sneaked that into the 15" as well, as it now too is shipping with the new keyboard (while the Air, MB and external keyboards remain flat)...

Odd?! I also wonder how much 'better' the feel of the curved keys is....

Do you believe the 15 inch MBPs shipping since Tuesday already have these curved keys? Can anyone here confirm this?
Or will they start building these new keyboards into the 15 inch models when they start shipping the 17 inch models?

Is it possible that the keys already are curved but very, very slightly and that Apple only has changed the text a little bit? Ok, this seems to be ridiculous. I would say my keys are not curved.

Hi Dan,

When did you buy yours?

The one I am sitting typing on right now, I purchased today (Thursday 8th January) though the keyboard looks the same as the one we purchased around a month ago. Definitely has a gentle curve.

Per the text on Apple's site, they just added that sentence this week.....

Could it be that you are reading too much into the text? (though I dunno. 🙂 )
Obviously the web pages have been updated for the 15" MBP to sit in line with the new 17".
Could be the the text has simply been added for the sake of consistency, that the keyboards are exactly the same as they have always been (they just failed to mention the curves the first time around.) 😉

However, even if Apple have indeed changed the keyboard, it will always come down to personal taste. Some will prefer flat, others will prefer curved (just like the matt/gloss display debates.)

In addition, I do feel that if the keyboard had changed, there would be additional mention of it on the net from obsessive Mac fanboys. I can't find any mention of this.

so has any one got some real evidence of this yet... and if they have started putting them into the 15s when did that start?, and how can we tell (serial number?) also i heard a rumor that the mechanism was upgraded in the 17s and 15s to stop the key pop off... can anyone confirm this......

basically I just wanna know which version of 15 inch uni body i have if in fact there has even been an update? thanks

No evidence, and as far as I can ascertain - no proof of this yet anywhere on the net (including the harder-core Mac fanboy sites.)

I could be wrong, but my guess is that Apple simply reworded the site and description of the keyboard (marketing and all that) when the 17" was released, and that there is no change whatsoever.

As for the keyboard mechanism being upgraded - most electronic manufacturers will refine/enhance components silently overtime. Whether this has actually happened yet or not is a different story, and not everyone has an issue with keys popping off regardless.

I hope this is the case! If the keys are rounded enough it could really improve touch typing speed. As boardhead62 said it would do away with slipping in to the next keys and hopefully less corrections 🙂
It's very believable that the text was simply updated on the website but I think it's more likely to be the case that all the MBP 15 inches produced before the change would have to be sold before the new ones, but I don't have a clue how Apple actually go about this!
