Moving from Palm Tungsten to iPod touch

Hi all.

Please give me your advice before I spend a fortune on $1.99 applications (and days of wasted time!):

In your opinion, what are the best iPod apps to replace the following Palm apps:

1- "Tasks" (To do's):
2- "Memos":
3- "Notepad":
4- "HandyShopper":

I can live with iCal to replace "Calendar" and AddressBook to replace "Contacts Pro". But for the four above, I've only found amateurish or incomplete apps.

If you have found good replacements for these apps (i.e. with at least the same functionalities as the ones on the Palm), please let me know!

Thanks!

iMac (3.06 GHz), Mac OS X (10.5.6), Power Mac G5 (Dual 1.8), old iMac, very old 6500

Hi Michel,

I'm also transitioning from a Palm Tungsten to an IPT. I agree the others' comments could have been more helpful. Anyway, I have Documents To Go on my Palm and they have announced they are in the process of producing a version for the IPT and they may have some of the apps you are looking for.

1. I use the Palm Desktop for my To Do's and tasks, and still do, I haven't found a better app on the app store. I was also hoping for a more positive response from the other posters.

2. I have seen some "Memos" on the app store, but have not tried them, try under Utilities or Productivity or Business headings in the app store.

3. Same as in 2. above.

4.I don't know if you have Documents To Go on your Palm, but if you do, I think you may find it easier to make a template up in Excel on your computer and copy it over to your Palm, like I did. The Word and Excel files are quite small on the Palm and I found these apps were invaluable to me, together with Filemaker Mobile, which again, I understand the new Filemaker 10 is supposed to work on the IPT.

I did try a free shopping list app called "ShopShop", but it is very poor. If you want an app that you can use on the go from your IPT, then I suggest you try this one for now, because I have not found any apps that allow you to edit any Word or Excel files on the IPT, only to view them, so I am waiting for Dataviz (who make Documents To Go) to finish their IPT version.

If you have time to make a list in Excel on you computer, there are 2 apps that I've tried where you can copy Word or Excel files to your IPT, but only to view, not to edit. They are "Air Sharing" and "Flash Drive".

The app store is still very young, but slowly big apps are being written. At the moment there seems to be a shortage of real business or professional apps.

I hope you find this helpful, and I like you, will have to be patient before the app store has more mature apps like we have had the benefit of using on our Palms.

Cheers.

I believe the app store has been a phenomenal success in such a short time, and a brilliant idea. But because there are so many thousands of apps, and so time consuming to search, Michel was asking for constructive help in case anyone had specific experience of the said topics.

I appreciate his problem because I have also found it frustrating because there is so much worthless material to trawl through. Try and be a bit more mature in your responses instead of useless throw-away comments. If you can't give a mature and appropriate reply, don't bother in the first place.

Finally, a meaningful reply! Thank you,deanbar!

1- I'm currently testing the app "Toodledo" (on the IPT); it's not too bad, but it's lacking a couple of important features: for instance, you can specify a time for a task, but there's no alert! Also, the interface for repeating tasks is not very friendly; nor is the date selection tool which doesn't use a calendar-type interface. Re-scheduling a task is not as friendly as the Palm either. On the plus side, it does synchronize seamlessly with a Web-based desktop app. Why Apple decided to include "ToDos" in Mail is beyond me; especially since you can not access them in the IPT version of Mail!

2, 3- I haven't started looking at a replacement for Memos. I would expect there are a few that would do a decent job. If anyone has recommendations, they're welcome.

4- I use an app called HandyShopper on the Palm. It's a great tool to keep all kinds of lists. For instance, all our supplies' inventory is on the Palm; every week, we take an inventory of our supplies (in location sequence) and identify those items that need to be re-ordered. Then, we look at them in supplier sequence and tick them off as we place our orders over the phone. When finished with placing the order, we use the function "Checkout" which resets all those items that we were able to order and doesn't touch those items that were not ordered. I have yet to find the equivalent on the IPT. I'm looking at Listomni which, I suspect, may be able to do the job. However, the interface is cryptic; and the documentation is very limited. I also tried something called "Shopper". Much too rudimentary...

From what I can see so far, your comment about the App Store being in its infancy is quite right: the apps I've looked at all appear to be versions 1.0... I imagine in a few years' time some will have matured and many will have fallen by the wayside (after having wasted countless hours of prospective user time).

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

By the way, you may be interested to know about an app called "Files Lite" (limited in size, the Pro version being unlimited). It does allow you to store and view (but not edit) files in a variety of formats, from Mac or PC.

Good hunting!

Hi, all.

Just a few comments on some apps I've evaluated and can recommend as replacements for Palm apps:

_Todo 1.6 by Appigo_: well made, *syncs with iCal* (and Toodledo, if you prefer that);

_Notebook 1.2 also by Appigo_: seems to be OK and a good replacment for the Palm app;

_Listomni 2.0.1 by Ontomni_: astoundingly versatile and flexible list manager. *Can import from HandyShopper* (or any app that can export from Palm in Palm format). Fast, very helpful and complete email support. The application includes a detailed Help and Tutorial section. A must see if you're into lists;

_Stanza by Lexcycle Inc_: a good replacement for PalmReader.

Good luck to all!
