Thought this would be simple. I'm trying to network a G4 Quicksilver w/ a G5 iMac. Addresses check out, all seems to be set properly for the firewire connection. My network utility shows both computers communicating. But where the G4 shows a server icon for the iMac and connects, the G5 continues to tell me that I must fix the G4 icon's alias. It's the G4 I wish to use as the server, of course. The G4 address and name show in my server window on the G5, but the connect button is unresponsive. There has to be an obscure setting that's off or a corrupted or missing file on the G5 but I'll be darned if I can find it. When I got the G5 I did upgrade the OS from Panther to Tiger and transferred the files. Help?
G4 933 mHz, 512 MB RAM, 60 Gig, 120 Gig HDs, 1.8 gHz iMac G5, 75 Gig HD.,
Mac OS X (10.4.9),
OS 10.1.2, 9.2.2, NEC 3550A, Stylus Photo 1280, ScanMaker i900
Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I've tried that. The issue remains that the Connect button does not respond, no matter what the input. I assume It's the same reason that even though the G5 sees the G4, it tells me it's not there. Just for grins, I changed the name of the G4 and it instantly showed on the G5, but at the same time that darned machine says it can't find it.
They are connected thru Firewire with all services on but Windows Sharing. I've changed these from time to time with no effect. The IP adress and subset mask are as I've been directed before. The G4 address ends in 1.1, the G5 in 1.2. Subset is standard, same on both.
Do you have Internet Sharing enabled on the G4? I think it interferes with File Sharing on the same interface. If you do, you;ll need to reboot both afer turning it off, iirc.
I'm going to give that a try with one concern. My broadband connection run through the G4 and I'd like to have that access without having to call a Comcast tech who's limited expertise is in Windows. I'll be right back.
What is confusing me is the IPs you listed, the 3rd & 4th numbers in the G6 should have been one higher in each place than the G4... but what are they?
OOPs, have asked that the outside 76.x IPs be removed since that is how the whole world can see your computer, the 192.x IPs are safe to post as they cannot be seen on the Internet.
On the G4, click on Firewire then Configure, click on the TCP/IP tab, does it have a Router entry under IP & Subnet Mask? How about the G5?
Thanks for watching my back. The only place a router shows in in the TCP/IP tab in the Ethernet Config. on the G4. The Firewire Configs. you asked about show blank routers on both machines.
