G5 won't connect to server

Thought this would be simple. I'm trying to network a G4 Quicksilver w/ a G5 iMac. Addresses check out, all seems to be set properly for the firewire connection. My network utility shows both computers communicating. But where the G4 shows a server icon for the iMac and connects, the G5 continues to tell me that I must fix the G4 icon's alias. It's the G4 I wish to use as the server, of course. The G4 address and name show in my server window on the G5, but the connect button is unresponsive. There has to be an obscure setting that's off or a corrupted or missing file on the G5 but I'll be darned if I can find it. When I got the G5 I did upgrade the OS from Panther to Tiger and transferred the files. Help?

G4 933 mHz, 512 MB RAM, 60 Gig, 120 Gig HDs, 1.8 gHz iMac G5, 75 Gig HD., Mac OS X (10.4.9), OS 10.1.2, 9.2.2, NEC 3550A, Stylus Photo 1280, ScanMaker i900

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I've tried that. The issue remains that the Connect button does not respond, no matter what the input. I assume It's the same reason that even though the G5 sees the G4, it tells me it's not there. Just for grins, I changed the name of the G4 and it instantly showed on the G5, but at the same time that darned machine says it can't find it.

They are connected thru Firewire with all services on but Windows Sharing. I've changed these from time to time with no effect. The IP adress and subset mask are as I've been directed before. The G4 address ends in 1.1, the G5 in 1.2. Subset is standard, same on both.

Here's everything In the Network Preferences windows for each machine:

G4 Network Status Pane
Built-in Ethernet IP=76.XX.XX.XXX
Firewire IP=192.XXX.X.X

Firewire Pane
(TCP/IP)
Same Firewire IP
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0
IPv6 address=fe80:0000:0000:0000:0203:93ff:fe83:3f54

Built-in Ethernet Pane
(TCP/IP)
Config. IPv4=Using DCHP
IP=76.25.65.158
Subnet Mask=255.255.248.0
Router=76.25.64.1
Same IPv6 address

(Ethernet)
Ethernet ID=00:03:93:83:3f:54

G5 Network Status Pane
Built-in-Ethernet IP=Blank
Firewire IP=192.168.1.2

Firewire Pane
(TCP/IP)
Same IP address
Subnet Mask=255.255.255.0
IPv6 address=fe80:0000:0000:0000:020d:93ff:fe72:77d0

Built-in Ethernet Pane
(TCP/IP)
Config. IPv4=Using DHCP
IP=Blank
Subnet Mask=Blank
Router=Blank
IPv6 address=Blank

(Ethernet)
Ethernet ID=00:0d:93:72:d0

As far as assigning IPs statically, I'm just an artist so I'm not sure what you're referring to here. Help?

OOPs, have asked that the outside 76.x IPs be removed since that is how the whole world can see your computer, the 192.x IPs are safe to post as they cannot be seen on the Internet.

On the G4, click on Firewire then Configure, click on the TCP/IP tab, does it have a Router entry under IP & Subnet Mask? How about the G5?
