Huawei E220 HDSPA USB modem problems

Hello!

I have problems with USB card in subject when I tried to connect to network. I had installed Huawei drivers, Vodafone Mobile Connect software, configured network settings by softver and manually but no luck. I allways get "No network protocols running" message at the end. ppp.log is at the end of the post.

As you can see from the log, CHAP authentication succeeded. So it is not authentication problem.

I tried same procedure on Powerbok G4, and my Mac mini (only difference in procedure was intel and PPC driver versions from E220.zip which I found on net).

USB Card is working properly because I can connect from PowerMac G4 with Mac OS 10.3.9 installed without any problem, following the same procedure I done on other two Mac's running Tiger.

I'm clueless how to proceed troubleshoot. Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem?

Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Hi BDAqua,

Thanks for quick reply.
I already saw that post, in fact I read almost all forums regarding error "No network protocols running" and problems with Huawei E220 USB modem, and tried almost every suggestion.
Is there any way to find ppp config files?
Few years ago I had some issues with Globetrotter EDGE card on Linux and have to edit manually some config files, but I cannot find corresponding files in MacOSX (on Linux they are in /etc/ppp)

Fact that there is a driver for Intel platform, is giving me hope that it should work with OS 10.4.
Other thing is that drivers are installed with no problems and it is recognized correctly by the system. Also when I run VMC or Huawei Mobile Connect application it detects ISP network and signal streght. I also checked with ZTerm APN with command AT+CGDCONT? and it all is correct.
CHAP authentication also works (opposed to most problems posted to forums).

Kind regards,

BDAqua thanks!

Discussing with you cleared my mind ๐Ÿ™‚ so I found cause of my troubles. It wasn't visible at first sight but the issue was in CHAP authentication. I should use PAP authentication, so I had to create options file in /etc/ppp and add the lines to disable all versions of CHAP:
refuse-chap
refuse-mschap
refuse-mschap-v2

On my machine the /etc/ppp folder was empty and that is the reason why I asked in my previous post were the config files should be.
I'm still confused where are /etc/ppp/peers configuration on Mac and all the settings configured under Szstem Preferances/Network (ethernet, modem, airport, etc.) but that is something probably theme for another discussion ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks very much for your time and help!

Very astute work on your part btw.

Glad to hear you were able to iron out some of the irritable problems
dealing with the Huawei hardware and their tiny alien nannite-sized
drivers can cause. In a few instances, if you find they've gone on a
general strike, you can get them to function by pretending to flood
their hardware operator with a hops-based fermented product.

Among the Huawei drivers, they find consumption of said liquids
very against their belief system; so much so, rebellions may occur.

Good luck & happy computing! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the tips BDAqua. I will review all files to better understand how it is working. I find iTerm and vi more useful to troubleshoot problems and do advanced configurations then all those fancy applications with tons of icons ๐Ÿ™‚ Probably cause I worked in Linux enviroment for several years (still do but rarely). And found out that shell is very good friend ๐Ÿ™‚
