iPhone 2G Wifi Speeds Slow

I downloaded Speedtest to my 2G iPhone (2.2 version). With my Netgear WGR614 G router set to B only I get from .5mb/s to 1.2mb/s down and about .8 up. With the router set to G I get .3-.4mp/s and about .7 up. When I run the Speed test on my iMac I'm getting 3mb/s to 5mb/s ( I'm paying for 10mb/s but Time Warner is slow in the evenings). So the iPhone can't get the speeds of a desktop. What is the download rating on the iPhone?

So then I turned off the Netgear and set the my Airport Extreme basestation to N with B/G compatibility. The phone connects as G and gets the same lousy download speeds as when it's running on G on the Netgear router.

I started looking closer at this when I noticed youTube streams were slow. I thought it was my ISP and it still may be because in the morning youTube streams fine. I'm thinking the poor performance of the Time Warner network is contributing to this problem. My Time Warner speeds are suppose to be 10mb/s down and 1mb/s up. The iPhone reaches close to 1mb/s up limit but fails miserably down.

Is my iPhone Wifi defective? What is the maximum speed the iPhone can receive. I have WPA2 encryption enabled.

Thanks

Kelvin

I have the exact same thing. I just upgraded to 2.2, before I dont have this problem. Wondering if 2.2 cause a problem.

Using wifi, I can't connect at all to sportacular, youtube, wikipedia. But I can connect to weather, stocks, itunes, bloomberg. Even it's very sluggish. But speedtest show my speed is fast, and latency is low.

I did try reboot router and forget network setting in iPhone

Anyone experienced this ? Any solutions ?

I got up early and ran the same test on B and G networks. The throughput is much better. I got above 7mb/s on one download test. The issue is with the latency of my ISP, Time Warner, during the evening hours and the problem with the iPhone not being able to handle the latency using the my G network. For some reasons in these conditions switched to a B network streams more consistently. The iPhone never gets the speed of the iMac but that is understandable. What I've done is set my Airport Extreme to N plus B/G compatiblity and left my Netgear (in bridge mode) as B. That way I can switch between networks depending on bad Time Warner is during the evening.

Verizon FIOS service is coming soon to our neighborhood. They've been laying cable everywhere. I understand that have a more consistent service.

I use Comcast for my internet connections. Speed tests this morning while using my iPhone 2G produced about 10 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload rates. In contrast, my iMac produced about 17 Mbps download and only 3.3 Mbps upload.

It appears the 2G iPhone may be throttled at about the 10 Mbps download rate. I have no idea why my iPhone uploads maybe 20% faster than my iMac does. It might be interesting to see similar test results from others.
