LED Cinema Display weird ticking noise

Just bought a 24" Display and every now and then I hear a "tick" noise around the speakers. I turned out the sound to check and the noise still occurs.

Anyone else has experienced this?

Im considering having mine replaced... the only thing is, when you look at the forums a lot of people have had trapped dust and certain things behind the display... So I really dont know what to do. My other screen doesnt make any sound like this at all.
I may give apple care a ring rather than taking it back to the store...

This may sound silly but have you tried plugging the screen into a surge protector then into the mains? Unfortunately I dont have a surge protector with me at the moment so I am unable to see if it makes a difference...

O.k. I had this ticking noise and actually called Apple and reported it. Well, touch wood, the noise went away after I cleaned my desk (!!!!) and disconnected my external USB hub and all of the peripherals. Seriously, a low tech solution, perhaps a total fluke, but hey.... NO weird ticking sound!!!!

oh.... and I also got a clean desk, for a while. It's now messy again.

I just picked one up yesterday and it is exhibiting this very problem. As several before me have said, there's no question in my mind, that this noise is the electronics heating up and expanding.

It only does this when the monitor wakes from sleep. After about 5 minutes, it stops. I have a USB drive, an iPod and a Serial to USB adapter plugged in. The noise has nothing to do with any of those IMHO.

Once the monitor is warmed up, the noise stops every time. I also suspect that with time, this will go away for good. But that may be wishful thinking on my part. The monitor does get quite warm, I must say.

I can live with it.. especially since it does stop after 10 minutes or so.

The noise you are talking about is not the same noise as discussed here. My first LED Cinema Display made the same noise as you described. It was even more annoying than the ticking sound we are all experiencing. And you are right, that noise was caused by heat-expansion.

Hmm, that's quite possible. Both, you could argue, make a ticking sound.. How is the sound that you are hearing, different from that of components heating up ? Is your ticking sound constant ?

Thanks

I bought my 24" Cinema Display three weeks ago. I have been wondering what that mysterious clicking noise was. I finally put my ear up close to the computer and determined it was indeed coming from the display.

As I'm typing this, I have noticed the clicking/cracking sound has stopped. However, like others have said, it's quite disturbing.

It would be really helpful if an official response was posted so that I can know if we need to spend the time and effort to bring our displays in for replacement.

If this is a "normal" condition of the display warming up, that's fine (although a bit disconcerting), but I would like to know for sure.

The sound I am hearing only occurs when a LED Cinema display's brightness is lower dan 50%. Between different LED Cinema's this is variable. My current display only makes the ticking noise when brightness is set to the 7th block from the left. (total of 16 blocks).
This is my fifth LED Cinema I'm on. To bad I didn't had the chance to test all my displays because I only started to notice this sound on my third display because I send the first 2 away because of dust/other material behind the glasspanel so I didn't check for other defects.
My thirth display had 2 sorts of ticks. The first one was a real loud tick. This tick only occurred the first 5 minutes or so when I put on the display. After that it was gone. The other tick is not as loud as the first tick I mentioned and occurs more rapidly.

I have two Apple LED displays. One attached to my Mac Pro and another to my Mini. No usb hubs on either. They weren't making any clicking noise until today.

Took me a while to figure out what was doing it. Had them a couple weeks now and zero problems until now.

Thing is they have no dead pixels or dust showing so I'm afraid to exchange them , but this noise is quite annoying overall.
