Keyboard Gibberish

After updating to 10.5.6, my keyboard stopped functioning properly. It now spouts nothing but gibberish. It seems like the "Symbol" function is stuck on somewhere, and I couldn't get into the OS to fix it because none of my passwords work.
I am using the wired aluminum keyboard on a PPC G4 running 10.5.6.
Thanks for any insight!

I note you also referred to “Lucida Grande.ttf” -- if you have such a font installed, it isn't the one installed by Apple.

Exactly. Lucida Grande.ttf is installed by some other app. Lots of people wind up with it, and then have Hebrew letters appearing in the wrong places, especially iTunes. Lucida Grande.dfont, as you say, should never be removed, and that advice needs to be included whenever removal of Lucida Grande.ttf is recommended. The latter is normally found in Library/Fonts or Home/Library/Fonts, while the .dfont is found in System/Library/Fonts. So far I'm not aware of anyone doing the wrong thing when implementing this fix.

Yikes! What brain-dead application would install that Lucida Grande.ttf font (must be an old Carbon one from OS 9 or early days of OS X)? That would be good to know in helping people troubleshoot these problems.

I don't think it is from an old app, but have never been able to figure out exactly where people get it. One current app which includes this font is Safari for Windows, but I don't think that's the usual source.

I can use Grab in a Services compliant application (which doesn't save a file, but pastes the grabbed selection into the same window, at least in TextEdit).

If you launch Grab independently, it creates a .tif file on you desktop I think.

Good tip, on topic too, for people who find they can only type gibberish but still use the mouse and need an example of what they're experiencing.

I'm gonna break off my participation in this thread and redo it as a new topic in the next day or so, including your thoughts and experiences. Thanks.
