In regard to the "Restore from Backup" comment,
1) How do I do that, and
2) I assume you would do that with the computer you sync it with i-Tunes with. If so, how many back-ups does it store? I have sync'ed since the problem started.
Every time you synch, iTunes does a backup. AFAIK, they are all saved. When you restore, iTunes gives you the choice of using a backup or as a "new iPhone". When using the backup, settings, apps, stored data are restored. Although convenient, there is the potential of corrupt code being put back in. So, if restoring from a backup doesn't help, go to new iphone.
One other possibility that may not be relevant to you: Updating to the 2.2 firmware caused battery drain problems because of screwed up mail settings, particularly with MS Exchange. The phone would endlessly ping the servers and the only way out was to reinstall Exchange. Other mail settings got changed as well. Check your mail settings including fetch and push settings.
