iPhone Battery Issues

I have a iPhone 3G and I have been very pleased with it until couple days ago. I set up a IPSec VPN connection and downloaded the RDP Lite App from the App store. As soon as I did this and was connected to my network remotly for less than five minutes, my battery started draining.
Three days ago, I finally deleted the VPN configuration and uninstalled RDP Lite hoping that would solve the probem. Since this change, the battery last about five hours less than it did before. I have also tried to drain the battery until it shuts down and give it a complete charge, with no improvments. Does anyone have any idea how I could improve this?

I have noticed something very interesting with my new 3G iPhone as opposed to my older original iPhone. I really never had a issue with battery drain or battery issues with my original and have been somewhat frustrated with the new 3G. Now I love the 3G connectivity and speed... just wish my battery, along with everyone else, would last longer.

What I have noticed is this... when I am in my home area which is Dallas / Ft. Worth my battery drain is pretty heavy. This area is all 3G. I generally have to charge my phone every evening. This past week I was up at Lake Texoma which is only covered by AT&T's Edge network... I went two and a half days without having to charge my phone. The battery drain on the Edge network verses the 3G is significantly different.

Cheers,
Ronnie

OK. While your discussions were very entertaining, I am still having the problem. I did the "hard reset" (Sorry Dynamite, I'm a PC network administrator . . . ) with no luck. I charged the phone over night. Removed it from the battery around 7:30 this morning. Now, 1:45 PM, I just had a warning box tell me I am down to 20% remaining. I am beginning to wonder if these apps have just F'ed my battery all together.
In regard to the "Restore from Backup" comment,
1) How do I do that, and
2) I assume you would do that with the computer you sync it with i-Tunes with. If so, how many back-ups does it store? I have sync'ed since the problem started.
Thanks guys!

One other thing to try that has worked for me, involved recalibrating the battery/charging circuit. basically the iphone thinks the battery is lower then it is.

Reboot the phone
charge until full wall charger.
run all the way down (play a movie on full brightness maybe)
acknowledge low battery warnings, but leave on until it shuts off and will not turn on.
Recharge to full from wall charger..

I was working well, then one day I couldn't get 6 hours without a warning. This happened for a few days, and then i found this suggestion. It worked for me.

I go 2 days between charges usually, with push email.

Every time you synch, iTunes does a backup. AFAIK, they are all saved. When you restore, iTunes gives you the choice of using a backup or as a "new iPhone". When using the backup, settings, apps, stored data are restored. Although convenient, there is the potential of corrupt code being put back in. So, if restoring from a backup doesn't help, go to new iphone.

One other possibility that may not be relevant to you: Updating to the 2.2 firmware caused battery drain problems because of screwed up mail settings, particularly with MS Exchange. The phone would endlessly ping the servers and the only way out was to reinstall Exchange. Other mail settings got changed as well. Check your mail settings including fetch and push settings.

How do I stop this each time I sync?

Thanks Phillip

Hi

I have battery life on stand by of only a few hours. I have carried out a hard reset, used new phone on the restore and that seemed to fix the issue until my next sync to update my ipod songs.

Now I am back to where i started. I run very few applications (solitaire), bluetooth and WiFi are turned of. I have a exchange mail set up and an AOL account, the later is set to manual.

Any thought or solutions?

Thanks
