canvas window exclamation

Every time I pause video in the timeline, a yellow triangle with an exclamation point shows up in the canvas window. At the beginning and end of the video only, it is a green checkmark.

What do those mean? How did they get there?

You've turned on 'show excess luma'. You can turn it off from the right hand drop down menu at the top of the canvas window.
If your movie shows a yellow exclamation mark it means your white levels are pushing legal limits, a red one means they're over. Only really an issue if you're going to dvd or broadcast, but you may still want to tweak even if it's just for web.
I heard once that having this setting switched on can affect the output from a capture card, but I don't know if this is still the case.
