I have sound on my computer, but when I try to plug headphones into the jack, the sound continues to come from the internal speakers as if I never plugged headphones in. I go to system preferences and look to switch sound to the "Headphones" option, and it's not there. I have tried numerous sets of headphones. I see no red light when I unplug them. I installed new RAM last Sunday, but I believe the headphones have worked since then. Does anybody have any ideas as to what could have happened or how I fix it? Thanks.
You may have a damaged headphone jack. It's supposed to sense the headphone plug and switch the audio to headphone. If inserting a headphone plug several times and wiggling doesn't help it, it may be broken.

So "headphones" is not supposed to come up until headphones are plugged in?
Correct - the System Prefs/sound/output would show "built-in speaker" until something is plugged into the headphone jack, then it changes to "headphones" - unless a digital optical plug is inserted, then it should change to digital output.
Sounds like you may need Applecare or Apple Store help.
