READ THIS if your finder is crashing/looping/closing folders!!!

It took me weeks(!) to find this solution here, but I think at least for me it worked and could be helpful for anyone else who has this or similar issues (such as when typing you lose the cursor
and you have to click back into the program you are using) after the last Apple Security Update that caused this bug.

I do not know if this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.

It seems all to be linked to Stuffit and a preference called Stuffit AVR (Archive Via Rename): In your system preferences go to the bottom and click on the Stuffit AVR option. Click the Stuffit AVR tab
on the left, and click the "STOP" button. This should do the trick. For some reason this is cycling through our desktop/finder and causing so much of the frustration since this update.

Hope this helps!

Hello all, new forum poster here, as I have had no trouble thus far!

I have a 17" Powerbook G4 1.67 ghz, running 10.4.11. A couple of weeks ago, Finder started crashing whenever I opened a folder in either Icon or List view. It would freeze momentarily, all the desktop icons would disappear, and then would return. I looked at this thread, and tried some of the things mentioned. I do not have StuffIt installed, nor is there anything in my Login Items, or in the Contextual Menu Items.

As of yesterday, I started having severe problems with most audio related programs. Audacity, Switch, Peak LE, etc. They are all similarly crashing, almost always when trying to open a file. I have tried deleting and reinstalling most of them. I have tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions. The only thing that did help some was creating a new user account. None of this seems to happen when I am i logged into the other account.

Any thoughts on this? I would GREATLY appreciate any help anyone can give! Forgive me if I am missing something further up on this thread!

Hi Tristen, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Your certainly welcome to wait here for an answer, but not many helpers will look into such a long trhread and try to assist, (takes about 5 minutes just to load this page on my Dial-up!).

Feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

If I meet you in the street on a hot sunny day JoeJoebee, you get a very large ice cream, with all the trimmings, chock stick, hundreds of thousands , whatever your desire, free!

That worked a treat. Bit of a derrrrrrrr since it's been going on since your post and its the 5th of May today!

Apple could say something. May not be there fault directly. Seems I have been lulled into a false sense of all's well with auto downloading. Have to watch that now!

Thanks for saving my brain!

Mind commenting on this again, BDAqua? I have four accounts on my machine, all set for admin. In three of them, Finder relaunches every 5 seconds in Safe Mode, and I can't figure out how to get to System Preferences to check for Stuffit or anything else, for that matter. Finder in the fourth account behaves fine, and there is no Stuffit AVR to turn off. Thanks for your counsel.

Hi owapple, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, as not many helpers look at Solved/Answered Topics for people needing help, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

I and many others would be excited to be able to help you, but you'll likely need to start a New Topic at the link below to get attention to your problem, since not many helpers are gong to be looking in a Solved Topic for an unsolved problem. 🙂

PS. This thread takes a good 5 minutes for me to load up on Dial-up, so I don't visit hear often, and I'm certain I've missed a hundred questions or so.
