HP Photosmart C5180 - scanner not running

I use a HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-one and the scanner is not running. Also, when try to scan thru Adobe Acrobat Pofessional, this software just collapses and does not capture anything from the printer.
I use OSX 10.5.6 on an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz.
Should I download the complete driver from HP website?

MacBookPro and iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.6), 4 GB of RAM

I have the same problem with my 5180. It says the scanner can't be initialized, but I can print to the device with no problem. I don't have a direct connection- it's on my home network- and it did work when I first installed it a year ago.

I have tried to uninstall and re-install the software from the HP website to no avail.

Are there any other ideas out there?

Dygger, I too have encountered this same problem - I run my C5180 via LAN on TC and have for many months on Tiger. Recently upgraded to 10.5.6 and I have established the issue is the printer driver upgrade HP 1.1.1 Without this update both printer and scanner work fine. Add the update and the scanner stops. I have been through uninstall/re-install twice and each time time I apply the driver upgrade the scanner cannot be initialized. Also I am running the latest HP software for this - Scan Pro 7.4.5.

I have the same problem too with an HP OfficeJet J5750.

Here's the interesting thing... I have two Black Macbooks in the house. One has OSX 10.5.6 on it but was upgraded using SW update. That one works just fine with the Scanner/Printer.

My other one, which I just did a clean install of 10.5.6 from the box set, then a time machine restore of all applications does NOT work with the scanner, but prints just fine. I reloaded the HP v9.7 software, tried uninstalling it/re-installing it -- using 1.11 drivers tried it without 1.11 drivers.. it just doesn't work :/...

I hope HP releases a new SW sweet that solves this problem soon...

I also have the same annoyance with this HP product. I would not rely on HP fixing it in a driver update. I dont think that HP gives a toss about Mac. Yes they do provide drivers but only paid support to Mac. Went through a support call with HP on this and that was a very unconstructive experience to put it mildly. My workaround is that I scan to a memory card, put that in a camera and transfer to my Mac. Duh - but I dont do it often. Another way is to take the MB to the printer with a USB as that work most of the times...

Same setup here, same issue. I've got my C5180 connected to a D-Link W-(something or other) N-band router via ethernet. My 2.2 Ghz (late 2007) Macbook pro, running 10.5.6 and with the latest HP drivers, has issues. It can print flawlessly - as long as I'm connected to the network (ethernet or wifi), it works great. Yet, scanning doesn't work - it gives the same error.

Printing works fine either with the OS X included HP drivers or the HP drivers, but scanning doesn't work worth a darn. Bummer, that, it's a nice machine. I've had to resort to scanning to the memory card, which due to the low resolution it defaults to (and poor color settings), is limited mostly to scanning documents to images. For some odd reason, scanning actually "works" on my old iMac (DVSE - 500 mhz G3 - 10.4.11, 512 RAM) - at least it can initialize the scanner. Of course, the HP scan pro immediately crashes when I attempt to scan, and is slow as molasses running uphill in january, but at least it connects... It WILL usually work under Boot camp with XP SP3, but that's a pain.

Sadly, Photoshop, Image capture, and others have to go through the HP app to scan, although it can do it automatically - if only the app worked.

Is there a third-party driver, or software package, for the scanner? My next printer/scanner will NOT be an HP, but the printer at least works very well - there's no reason to upgrade apart from the scanner issue.

Also downloaded wrong app, trashed it and finally found

Downloaded and installed. Leopard compatible! MY printer worked after installing Leopard but scanner would not. New set up requires HP Photosmart 2575 scanner to be controlled by HP Scan Pro app on the monitor. The screen on the printer still claims that the scanner can't work!

Hi,

Had this problem running Leopard as well. I updated to Snow Leopard yesterday and still have the problem. However, took a look at HP support to see if there was any updates, or driver downgrades I could use, thy have a note for Snow Leopard that says the scanner is now not supported by HP software. Instead, they advise that Apple Image Capture should be used instead. I've tried this and it seems to work, my C5180 is also accessed via a router over the network.

So, seems to be working again under Snow Leopard if you avoid HP software. Maybe it's worth trying Image Capture under Leopard to see if it works that way too?

Here's the HP support link for Snow Leopard...
