Automatically add text to emails

There is a wonderful free add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird called quicktext:

This lets you quickly accomplish repetitive tasks, eg insert standard replies to emails with the recipients name already completed in the greeting line.

Is there similar plugin available for mail.app or a similar system wide app for os x?

I don't use Thunderbird and can't tell what exactly this plugin does. can you be more specific about which functionality exactly you need?
You can have lots of signatures in Mail and you can use them as template answers if you wish. you can also write apple script performing more complicated tasks and access those from the Scripts menu. what you can't do (and it seems that that Thunderbird plugin can) is trigger some action based on the recipient name or the subject line.

Basically, someone sends me an email requesting information on something and a lot of the time a standard answer will suffice. In quicktext you can setup several templates and just insert them an email from a pulldown menu (much like a signiture). However, the added benefit over a signiture is that you can use variables like [To=firstname] and [Text=HomeSignature] to automatically personalise the emails. I believe the pro (paid for) version also includes the ability to automatically add attachments based on variables in the quicktext template, which would be pretty handy for me.

I had thought of using signatures in Mail to setup template answers. I just wondered if there was anything available with added functionality. I haven't got into using apple script yet so that is not an immediately available solution for me.

Apart from this feature of Thunderbird I prefer using Mail.

I don't think so.
