Can anybody who has iM09 check if DV quality problem that iM08 had has been been fixed now?

"The question is shell I change field dominance or not?"

yes

" I did not found Custom frame settings in any of them."

share > qt then choose SIZE the scroll to CUSTOM.

the system works only with 4:3 -- I'm modifying the process to better support 16:9. The final process will be in my book.

I make no claims about iM08 -- I suspect it won't work based upon my experience with interlaced HD.

Post any questions you have.

This really stinks. I downloaded about 4 hrs of DV to Imovie 8 which the results described in this thread. Then called apple to see if they could assists. It seemed as though it was like the first time they had heard of this problem and suggested every possible cause other than a software problem (camera, firewire, etc). I then purchased a new flash memory camcorder (Canon FS100), imported video to Imovie 08 - and same crappy result. Does anyone know of a simple to use software package for Mac that actually works for basic video editing?

So you're saying I need t:

1. Set the project properties to 16:9 as DEFAULT
2. select the aspect ration for each clip 4:3 individually to "fit (if I want the whole frame for each clip)
3. Import the AVCHD footage to that timeline
?????

What would that do to the AVCHD footage that is set to 1080p on the Canon Vixia HF11? Will it suffer any degradation? Or will it have quality?

Maybe I should ask these questions on a new thread, not to mess up this one?

Thanks...

Yes

iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.

If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08 / 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.

iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is a "lossless" combination.

So, my choice would be:

1. Mullen's workaround for .dv into iMovie 09
2. Set the properties to 16:9
3. Drag new dv clips into time line, after workaround
4. Import the avchd footage
5. Add the avchd clips to the timeline that had the 4:3 + 16:9 (all set to 16:9 I properties)
6. Edit normally
7. Create the iDVD DVD(sharing from iMovie 09)

This wouldn't create any loss either on the .dv footage neither on the avchd 1080p footage, correct?

Will I notice an incredible quality difference (grain) from the HD and the miniDv footage within the same movie?

FCE is hard to learn... 😟

By the way, is there any file converter that converts .dv to AVCHD 1080p without much loss (or any loss at all) to then reimport to iMovie 09 via Mullen's procedure?

I wouldn't mind paying for such converter if it exists. I am desperate to get a good movie of my daughter's first week of life with good quality mixing the footage from the old Canon Optura 30 minidv cam and the new Cankn HF11 avchd cam.

Thanks and sorry for piling questions on you guys. You know everything about HD and movie editors and I am just learning...

I feel your best bet is to acquire a copy of imovie 06, probably by buying a copy of ilife 06 on ebay or some such site. For the 50-60 bucks you will pay you will be able to import your dv video in full quality, then use the imported files along with your AVCHD files in imovie 09. Additionally, imovie 06 will work perfectly with your dv camera and give you the best quality, something you will need to make the dv clips look their best next to the AVCHD clips.
Also, I think you need to resign yourself to the fact that nothing improves the quality of the original. Its just a fact of life that your new technology camera will provide superior output. Good luck, and hope this helps.

Coming just after April fools day. Two chapters to go and 2 weeks to go.

PS: I read "... you will be able to import your dv video in full quality" from iM06. 08 and 09 have always captured full quality DV -- they haven't been able to export it. But, there's been a posting that maybe 09 can -- if you do it a certain way. So let's hope I'm wrong and the other poster is right.

After all, since 09 can handle interlaced HD there's no real reason it can't handle interlaced DV.
