Russian Fonts

I have a standard qwerty keyboard. I received a file with content in Russian but this will not display. I guess I have to install the Russian fonts/characters. Can anyone tell me where to get those from and how to install them please? I asume they must be available from Apple somewhere but I haven't been able to find them.

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.5.6)

OS X already has fonts installed for Russian, there is no need to download anything or change any preferences. Most likely your document is in a legacy encoding instead the standard Unicode used by your Mac. What format is your file -- .doc, .txt? What program are you trying to open it with? If you want to send me a copy I can try to find the right encoding for it (tom at bluesky dot org).

If the language setting plays no role in reading or writing in a different language, what is it used for?

Its primary function is to determine the language of the menus and dialogues of the OS and the apps. It can also sometimes affect the choice of default font, outgoing email encoding, and spell checker language, plus determine the sort order for file/folder names.

I have Georgian & Ukranian languages both spoken in Russia

There are lots of others too:
