Hey, I was downloading the latest version of software for my ipod, and a window popped up saying it couldn't download. Now when I plug in to a usb port a window pops up saying "usb device not recognized one of the usb devices connected has malfunctioned. and Windows does not recognize it. And whats worse, my Ipod won't even turn on anymore!!!!!! What do I do?

Hi Im having the same nightmare!!! Exactly the same thing happened to me tonight. I was downloading new hardware to my iPod and it too crashed. I've tried the suggestions given by mrtotes and I am failing to get my iPod working again, iTunes is not recognising the device at all. All I can get on the screen is the iTunes logo & the usb cable. Ive tried the 5 r's and failed. Please help!!!

I got same problem too. I tried to update my ipod touch to v2.2.1, it could not recognized again, and an error 1602 occured. I found that my laptop cannot find a driver for ipod, but if I install it manually, another window will popup and ask me to locate a driver again.

This is driving me crazy, I just had my ipod touch replaced today, and it seems I have to make a reservation and go to ipod bar again....:(

BTW, my system is XP PRO SP3.

Hey all,

I later called apple service, and he ran me through all the attempts I had already tried, only to be stymied again. He said it sounded like a hardware issue, then told me to return it to where I bought it, Staples, and they had a new one for me the next day. The new one works fine so far, but I think the problem is MS Vista...

Have a good one

Any useful responses to this other than returning the iPod?

Got my iPod Touch 2G in the post today, connected it to laptop - it tells me it needs to update the iPod software. I do, it crashes. Now the iPod is not recognised as a working USB device at all and the iPod itself won't even turn on.

Not a happy return for a lot of expense - haven't even heard a tune on it yet! Can't even get a response when holding down the buttons for 20 seconds. Nothing. Dead machine after 15 minutes of trying to use it.

Hello Andy in Oxford - this is Dave in Bedfordshire.
If it is any consolation to you I appear to be having exactly the same problem.
I bought an ipod touch from Amazon, received on Thursday, connected to Vista Laptop on Friday. Decided to click on update software in itunes - this failed unknown error - since then touch will not turn on - and device now not recognised in any USB port.
I haven't got any idea what to do - have you yet?
Would be pleased to hear what you are doing or trying.
Thanks Dave.

My IPOD is also dead this evening afte trying to install the 2.2.1 update, I have a blank screen and no response from IPOD (Screen is blank)

I have also the USB Device Not Recognised message, I have tried holding the power and home buttons down for prolonged period, this provokes a response from the PC ie another USB device not recognised message but nothing on screen.

I have also ITUNES open hoping it would pick up the device and suggest reset or reinstallation / restore, but nothing !!! Help, any apple support folk on here ?

What should I do next ?

Frustrated
Adam

No consolation through shared misery, Dave!

My intention is to ring Apple on Monday and see about a repair. I would rather a refund as I now don't trust the hardware at all but since my iPod is engraved, I expect a battle on that front, although since Apple sent me something that only looks like an iPod, I believe my statutory rights should allow this.

It appears that the only value of this forum is to indicate that there is a definite problem with the firmware update or the iPod itself.

Shall report back....

Andy,
I am still working on it(haha)prior to emailing Apple probably tomorrow.
I think I will try to uninstall itunes and all associated with it on a Sony Vaio. Then reinstall and have a go.
Then try on another PC.
If all of this fails I will write to Apple. I believe all of this will fail.
Like you I think there is something wrong with the touch firmware - Google is littered with the problem but no answer.
This is all very frustrating as I fancied using a Touch but it seems to be completely useless and a waste of money at present
I'll keep posting
Good Luck
Dave

Another one weighing in here. I did the download, now it locks up itunes, the bar just goes back and forth saying verifying update, then nothing. On the Ipod, I see a picture of a USB connector and a music pic, I cant get into the IPOD at all. Itunes doesnt work, everytime I bring it up it says my phone needs a restore, so I do that, still end up with the verifying bar and itunes freezing.

I just got this a month ago, is this a common problem with apple that the updates do not work?

I tried uninstall and also tried on another machine - no luck. Since the iPod won't even turn on, I can't access anything to change settings back to factory, so it's just dead at the moment.

Just plugging it in to another machine (a PC and another laptop have been tried, running Vista and XP, one with iTunes, one without) results in "Malfunctioning USB device". So it's unidentifiable and unaccessible.

In other words: it's busted!
