Ipod touch won't work!!!

Hey, I was downloading the latest version of software for my ipod, and a window popped up saying it couldn't download. Now when I plug in to a usb port a window pops up saying "usb device not recognized one of the usb devices connected has malfunctioned. and Windows does not recognize it. And whats worse, my Ipod won't even turn on anymore!!!!!! What do I do?

Sorry: replied to wrong bit so, since I'm not 100% sure how this forum works, I'm repeating:

I tried uninstall and also tried on another machine - no luck. Since the iPod won't even turn on, I can't access anything to change settings back to factory, so it's just dead at the moment.

Just plugging it in to another machine (a PC and another laptop have been tried, running Vista and XP, one with iTunes, one without) results in "Malfunctioning USB device". So it's unidentifiable and unaccessible.

In other words: it's busted!

I tried the update earlier today. No luck for me. Now my ipod is stuck with the music note and USB picture. Itunes doesn't recognize it either. Called support...they think there might be a problem with the update software. Said it should be resolved tonight maybe. I was told to check back later to see if my problem gets resolved. When I told him that Itunes can't see my ipod, he decided to overnight me a box for repair. 😟

Spoke to Apple today: helpful guy didn't insist on going through an FAQ but understood that I had already tried all the usual tests. I would guess they are aware of the problem as they are not repairing the iPod, but are collecting it and sending a replacement.

I'm also told that if this one breaks, I can get a full refund, even though it's engraved, which is good news.

Here's hoping....

hello again,

I have spoken to Apple today about my bricked touch and they are sending a UPS courier to pick it up for repair/replacement tomorrow.

They asked me what I had tested and I had covered all of the known resets thanks to this forum I saved myself a lot of time. Only one further test requested by Apple it was for me to disconnect IPOD from PC then while holding down the home key to reconnect it to the PC, obviously this did not work.

I might suggest all with similar bricked (Blank Screen/USB Not Recognised touches) request Apple come pick it up asap.

PS - All this does is P me off but also makes me spend £38 for the additional years warranty also, is worth it for me as the service given by Apple seems pretty slick to me, with this I am impressed at the moment.

Lets see how long it takes for them to issue my replacement.

Regards

Adam

I have the same problem I think I installed the update, and all was well. Then I took the iPod out of my pocket later in the day and it had a blank grey screen. I held down both buttons to turn it off and now it won't turn on again. iTunes doesn't recognise it either?
Any solutions other than a replacement?
I have a 1G iPod touch, would it be replaced with a 2G?

+What is up with this, just downloaded the new hardware update (2.2.1) now my iPod has a mind of its own, so far I lost everything loaded on it due to trying to restore it after trying to reset it several times, with no change in performance. Generally, the screen is frozen and does not respond to touch and the home button doesn't respond either. The lock function seems to be stuck. Then magically, it will work for approximately 5-10 minutes before it cycles back into its frozen state. I can connect to iTunes and view the contents of the iPod from my computer, but I am very frustrated with the performance (or lack of, in better terms) of the iPod without iTunes connection. I am also very frustrated because my iPod is out of warranty as of December and I'm not willing to pay the repair fee. For a hundred bucks more I can get a brand new one! What advice do you have? Is there a way to downgrade the software on Windows?? Or where can I find out if there is a software update fix?+ Please Help, The Dane
