Ipod touch won't work!!!

Hey, I was downloading the latest version of software for my ipod, and a window popped up saying it couldn't download. Now when I plug in to a usb port a window pops up saying "usb device not recognized one of the usb devices connected has malfunctioned. and Windows does not recognize it. And whats worse, my Ipod won't even turn on anymore!!!!!! What do I do?

Yeah, Adam in snowy Gloucestershire here and I had no snags with 2.2.1. Given that you were both using brand new iPods it does hint at a batch problem. For iPods bought from Apple; engraving doesn't hamper your rights as a consumer. Hope the returns go smoothly and that you are enjoying the device soon because they are simply wonderful.

Great news, Apple have just offered to replace my crashed IPOD with new.

For those not reading the full thread this is following a failed installation of 2.2.1 to a 2G IPOD Touch using the download and install method.

Anyway for others with the same problem there should be light at the end of the tunnel.

Cheers (BTW I have had a good experience of the Apple Support, after I called the support line they picked up the IPOD the day after and diagnosed and detailed replacement the day after thats 3 days run so far since raising the call).

Possibly not great news. The polite people on support misunderstood me and refunded my dead pod (see above posts for the problems) instead of replacing it.

I ordered a new one; it arrived yesterday. All seemed fine - 1000 songs transferred. I hesitated to run the firmware update but figured I had to - it's going to get updated at some point right?

CRASH! Dave was right - dead iPod exactly as with the first one. That's me and Apple done; I'm getting this refunded and am off to see what the opposition has on offer.....

My iPod wasn't syncing calendars last night - turns out it had found the archive.pst file instead of the outlook.pst file. I RESTORED the iPod and was HORRIFIED that it started installing the new firmware! Oh no, there goes another week without the iPod, I thought. However, installed beautifully. I was brave enough to set up as a "new iPod" and not restore from backup.

Solution was not done by restoring iPod, but by renaming the archive.pst file to archive.old. Then iTunes just HAD to use the outlook.pst file.

Sorry to hear that your second one has died too.

Same thing happened to me last night. After reading all these posts I'm even my infuriated now. As a background my iPod Touch was bought just before Christmas 08, from a Best Buy in Charlotte, NC. It has been working just fine until this firmware update. I don't get the USB device unrecognized error in XP though - just the usual 'bing-bong' when a USB device is connected and detected.
I have tried these two methods, but so far, no joy.

The same thing happened to me, are you getting the iTunes symbol and the USB icon? If you are do the following, because I just called Apple today, and this thankfully worked:

1. Uninstall the following following programs:
a. Apple Mobile Device Support
b. Apple Software Update
c. Bonjour
d. Quick Time
e. iTunes

2. Go to www.apple.com/iTunes

3. Download iTunes

4. After opening iTunes plug your iPod to your computer, and you should be able to open it in Recovery Mode so that you can Restore your iPod.

Unfortunately you will have to re-sync your iPod, but it should work.

Good luck!

I hope this works for some people but there are mixed issues on this forum.

If you get the issue I had - during firmware update, it crashes, iPod is dead, won't turn on and is recognised on any (any) other machine as just a malfuntioning USB device - then the above fix won't work.

I tried it on both my failed iPod Touches. I should invoice Apple for the 14+ hours I've spent so far trying to fix something that was inherently broken.

It's undoubtedly a cool gadget but somewhere along the line, they aren't taking proper care of these issues. Be wary.

UPDATE: contrary to my previous post, I went for iPod number 3, after all, after being annoyed on the phone and getting a small discount for my trouble.

Deleted all Apple stuff from PC and reinstalled iTunes. Time-consuming and needed to reindex 40Gb of music (fortunately exported playlists to import later). I should invoice Apple for my time!

Connected iPod touch and transferred music. Used it for a day, just to prevent it from being "fresh". Ran update (which seemed to go slightly differently than before, so I suspect it has been tinkered with): works.

I remain unconfident of the hardware and unsure which adjusted detail saved number 3. But it is rather nice. Even for Twittering...

I know this maybe a little too late judging from the date of post, but for those still experiencing this problem, you may want to consider this hard restore method which worked for me.
Tip courtesy From aarond-sf of sioux falls, sd, Registered: Mar 30, 2009:

Have you've tried holding down the power button for several seconds?
If so and you're still getting nothing you may have to do a hard restore.

here's how to do it on Mac OS:

1. Connect you're iPod to the computer with the sync cable, and open iTunes.
2. Hold down the power and home buttons for 10seconds, then release the power button (continue holding the home button for about another 6-8 seconds). iTunes should display a message stating that the iPod is in restore mode and needs to be restored before it can be used (or something to that effect).
3.Hitting the restore button will likely give an error message. You'll need to hold down option and click the restore button, which will bring up a file browser. Navigate to <your user name>/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ and choose iPod2,1 2.2.1_5H11aRestore.ipsw (or similar ipsw file depending on your ipod, or iphone, generally choose the newest one) and click open.
4. Wait for it to restore, when that's finished you should be able to further restore it using the backup that was generated when you last synced it.

I have never done this on windoze, but I imagine it's quite similar, just not sure where you'd find the ipsw file.
