iPhoto Network Library = SLOW SLOW SLOW

I have my iPhoto library stored on an external HD on my iMac.
When running iPhoto on the iMac, I get instant access.
When running iPhoto on the Mac book, it takes minutes!!!!! to start.

This is not ok. Normally, it does take a few extra seconds on the Mac book, but this is ridiculous.

What's the problem. Faces and Place is not worth the ramp up every time the software starts.

But doesn't that risk exist all the time, regardless on which volume the library or images are being saved ?

No. If you run a referenced Library with the pics on the same volume you will be able to move the files around and the alias will still track them. Also, should the link be broken in a lot of cases repairing one alias in a folder will also repair all the other aliases in that folder as well.

On the other hand, what kind of risks are there if the library becomes corrupted ?

That you will lose the organisational work that you have put it: Creating Albums, keywords, Slideshows, Faces and Places and so on. You'll also lose the link between your original file and the edited versions for those you edit.

Of course, the protection against any of this is a good, up-to-date back up.

In any case i want to avoid loss of my images (originals). So please, feel free to advice!

Well Back up, back up back up.

Note that having your photos on the NAS is not a back up. A back up means multiple copies on different disks (and ideally outside your home too).

TD,

That's a lot of good info.
Thanks for that!

Indeed, the NAS is not a backup itself. The good thing is that it has a mirrored disk.
A regular backup of that outside the house will be the icing on the cake 😉 Still on my to do list..

What you write about the library on the same volume makes sense as well. Good to know the aliases have some built-in intelligence as well (I learn everyday as an apple newbee)

any advice on how to resolve the performance issue in some other way ? (besides waiting for an update of iphoto)

The performance issue is simply because the NAS is not appropriately formatted for iPhoto. There is no solution for this except to reformat the NAS - and then it won’t be a NAS anymore. Some folks have had success by creating a Disk Image, formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and putting the library on that, then storing the image on the NAS. Not easy work for someone new to the Mac.

TD,

That's indeed another solution that probably work well.
But.. as you mentioned, that's quite cumbersome for a newbee and just for one small feature like iphoto.

I do quite a lot with pictures and Picasa is also causing some trouble, so i am considering to move to whole bunch to the local disk on the iMac and let the timemachine do the backup to the NAS. It's the other way around of course and not preferable in my case, but at least it will work.

And... last but not least.. i provided apple with feedback on the product.
Fingers crossed for an update.

Thanks for thinking along with me!
