Following an incident free upgrade - sync'ing the iPhone produces a crash in iTunes during the application sync section.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Fix iTunes Crashes while iPhone and iPod Sync After Firmware 2.2.1 Upgrade

Dear Customer,
Recently, we uncovered an issue which was causing iTunes to unexpectedly quit when synced with an iPod or an iPhone. This issue impacted a small number of users, and we have identified your account as potentially being affected.
If you have experienced this issue, please follow these steps in order to sync your iPod or iPhone with iTunes:
1. Launch iTunes
2. Select “Deauthorize Computer” from the Store menu
3. Enter your iTunes Store Account ID and Password, then click the Deauthorize button
4. Next, choose “Authorize Computer” from the Store menu
5. Enter your iTunes Store Account ID and Password, then click the Authorize button
Once you have successfully deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, you should be able to sync your iPod or iPhone to iTunes.
I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced as a result of this issue.
Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer.
iTunes Store Team
The fix provided with email seems to be working for most of affected users Some, however, have to take the additional step of “purchasing” a Free iTunes App after following the steps before syncing will work again.

Do this...
Deauthorize your computer in iTunes
Hook up your iPhone
Tell iTunes not to sync your apps
Reauthorize your computer
sync everything but your apps
when that is done, sync your apps one by one.

if it crashes after you sync an app, then try again but this time, download a new free app (any app it doesn't matter) to itunes and sync that one first.

Many people have found this sort of paradigm to work.

You do have free support from Apple given that you just bought it. You might be able to call them too.

Good luck.

Yes, same problem here.

iTunes seriously hangs when trying to sync apps downloaded from the from the iPhone to the Mac. So if I download an app from the iPhone App Store it won't sync that purchased app with my Mac. It thinks about it, get so far, I get a lovely lollypop for about ten minutes and then the sync just stops. Nothing was transferred.

This is my first iPhone so I understand this problem didn't happen before. It ***** because my first experience with the phone is that it would sync apps! Serious bug I hope they fix soon.

Okay, what do you do if "deauthorize computer" does not come up ANYWHERE in the store menu? I even went to "my account" and it showed that I had 2 computers authorized, but there was no button that allowed me to deauthorize. (I've also discovered an additional problem... after I crashed iTunes about 3 times tonight, iTunes intermittently would not recognize my account password. But I suppose that is a different issue for a different day.)

When you launch iTunes, in the upper lift corner you will see the following menu selections:

File/Edit/View/Controls/Store/Advanced/Help

Click on the Store menu and there you will see the authorize/deauthorize computer selections.

Make sure you have the latest copy of iTunes - should be version 8.0.2.20 at least.

If you still don't see it then you need to reinstall the software - something is wrong. Good luck.

I have read all the messages on this discussion and my problem seems to be more or less like yours. I have an old IPhone one of my sons gave me when they upgraded to 3G. I dont sync all the time so I have no idea when this problem began, but when I tried to sync it this week, the device does not show up in iTunes. The moment I hook up the phone to the computer iPhoto pops up asking me if I want to sync the photos but nothing at all on iTunes. I have done everything they have suggested here short of deleting and re-installing iTunes and deleting and reseting everything on my iPhone and still my iPhone does not show up on my iTunes. Reading about all the problems with crashes perhaps its a good thing that my iPhone does not show up on iTunes to be synced- LOL!!!

All, I had a lot of these problems too, the freezing on the sync, the fact that it would just die trying to upgrade to 2.2.1 and get that stupid unknown error (14).

Here's how I fixed,

I plugged my iPhone into my friend's mac, restored it to 2.2.1, exited the sync on his mac, then plugged it into my computer and great success! Hopefully you got one good sync in there and you can restore your iphone from back up.

This has happend to me twice on two different iPhones. I have heard that it can be cause by apps. I buy all my music from Apple so I don't think it was that, but I'm willing to be the mini piano app or the google app might have given me this headache.
