Post 2.2.1 upgrade iPhone / iTunes sync crashes iTunes

I upgraded my 3G iPhone to v2.2.1 today after taking a backup.

Following an incident free upgrade - sync'ing the iPhone produces a crash in iTunes during the application sync section.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks

iMac 2.8G, PowerMac G5, Graphite Clamshell, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPhone, Mac OS X (10.5), Windoze.....

i went through both the iTunes and iPhoneUpdater logs (and didn't find anything I could decipher...not saying much though). iPhoneUpdater looks like a successful update. Here's the iTunes crash. All crashes appear to have this same data (only variation is in the register data...I think this is typical):

That's consistent with what I've also seen and sent to Apple:

woa, that sounds bad. I was about to sweat as I read all your issues with the iphone upgrade, as it was my first one and I just clicked upgrade without reading too much of what is does. I seem to have landed on the lucky side, though. My ipod functions normal on my iphone. Just funny that the guys at apple do not react to your posts. Is this forum not moderated by them?

Hey Alex. I've been having the exact same problem. The sync icon in the left column but nothing up in the top status window. All with the Auto-sync turned off in iTunes.

The thing is, that was before I was able to update my iPhone to 2.2.1 so I think it has something to do with the iTunes update. Actually, when I tried to update to 2.2.1 iTunes would crash after around 220 MB of the update was downloaded.

All that being said, after multiple restarts of the computer and iPhone and reinstalling iTunes I finally brought my iPhone into the Apple store (Genius Bar) this morning and they installed the 2.2.1 update and everything worked fine on their computer. I then brought my iPhone home and tried to sync but again, iTunes CRASH!!! So I made another appointment at the Apple store and this time brought in my computer as well (what a pain to lug an iMac in). This is what they did:

- they dragged a couple "plist" files to the desktop
- restarted iTunes and it rebuild the library and/or whatever else it did due to the files being removed
- tried to sync iPhone but problem NOT solved (iTunes crashed)
- did a full restore of my iPhone (started fresh to see if that was the problem).... nope!! iTunes crashed again
- tried to just manually update the music library to see if it was a problem with a specific file (song or video)... aha, that's it... sort of...

So it looks like there are a bunch of files that there's a problem with. Not sure which ones or what the problem is with them. I just got home so I'm going through my iTunes library and splitting everything up into folders (e.g. A,B,C) then trying to manually sync each one. When iTunes crashes then I know that one of the songs (or videos) within that folder has a problem and is causing the crash.

I have no idea why this just started happening but it's a major pain. I'll let you know if there's something consistent with the files that make iTunes crash.

Apple just contacted me. They had me create a new iTunes library. No dice. Next, just try and sync mail accounts. No dice.

Right now I'm running a data collection program. Once that finishes Apple suggested I try and create a new user and iTunes library and retry. I will do so next.

The diagnostic path they suggest makes sense.

1) a new iTunes library with no content eliminated corruption in the library. (although why an iPhone upgrade would have corrupted an iTunes library is a bit of a stretch)

2) the new user will eliminate anything in my HOME folder and/or preferences, etc.

More to follow...

Ignorant hunch: Problem only effects iTunes specific sync data.

All iTunes related data (Podcasts, video, music, ringtones, apps) sync fail. Since photos & mail info sync, I assume calendar and contacts would consistently sync as well.

Between my 2nd computer test and the equivalent Apple requested "new user" test, the problem is not specific to our software configuration.

Permission verification ok, but I did find a problem with my internal hard drive directory - Disk Utility reports an incorrect number of files (one more than expected). The hard drive where my actual iTunes music library has no found issues. Will try to fix the directory issue later.

The problem is either content specific (unlikely since the problem occurred after the new computer/itunes test with different content) or hardware/system specific. Then again, it might just be related to the extremely cold weather here...

I just noticed something. I set iTunes to NOT automatically sync my iPhone. Then in the Music tab I chose to sync "Selected playlists" and started off by just turning on one playlist at a time. After some would sync and others crashed I noticed that it seemed to be the playlists that contained files that were "Protected AAC audio file" were the ones that caused iTunes to crash. So, I just made a smart playlist that doesn't include any Protected AAC audio files (as well as video files) and it seems to be syncing everything so far.

I know this isn't a fix but maybe it will help someone figure out the problem. Also, I still can't get the Apps to sync and I'm not sure about videos... I'll try them once the audio files are done syncing.
