Post 2.2.1 upgrade iPhone / iTunes sync crashes iTunes

I upgraded my 3G iPhone to v2.2.1 today after taking a backup.

Following an incident free upgrade - sync'ing the iPhone produces a crash in iTunes during the application sync section.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks

I have the exact same problem. 😟 To make sure, I restored my iPhone and reinstalled iTunes, but I still can't sync my music and apps back, iTunes crashes after a short while withEXC BADACCESS exception. My wife's iPhone 3G still has the 2.2 sw on it, and iTunes crashes with that phone either, so it must be something with iTunes, not with the 2.2.1 sw. Syncing to AppleTV works fine.

VERY ANNOYING PROBLEM, APPLE PLEASE ISSUE A FIX FOR THIS ASAP!

I agree that it might be something to do with the latest iTunes update since my iPhone would crash iTunes before the upgrade to 2.2.1.

As I mentioned above, a simple solution to sync your music and videos is to make a smart playlist with the following setting "Kind > does not contain > protected" and only sync that or at least use that as a starting point to filter what you can put on your iPhone/iPod. Also, don't sync ringtones or apps for now.

I can confirm what keven-77 said, the problem is caused by the DRM protected music and apps. But kevin's approach is not really a solution, since I can't install any of my needed apps back on my iPhone, and some of my favorite audiobooks and music. 😟

The sad thing is that even reinstalling an older (8.0.1) iTunes doesn't fix the problem, maybe it's a library is at fault which came with the latest QuickTime+iTunes update.

You can still install your apps - just use the App store on the iPhone to download the apps you've already purchased You won't be able to sync again until the fix, but it gets you back to a useable state.

I'm still having issues with Podcasts. Don't know that I care enough to isolate if its a specific podcast. There's a few that are AAC, but none are identified as protected. Hopefully a fix comes before my flight Tuesday....

Thanks for doing the communications work with Apple, Alex. Don't think I'd be up to that before breakfast. 🙂

Here are a few more thoughts from this morning (and I am at this point assuming this is somehow DRM-related):

a) It doesn't seem to be caused by iTunes per se, as a machine with a few system upgrades yet left undone (noticeably the iLife media library browser update) does NOT exhibit the problem. Same version of iTunes (8.02), with an iPhone 2.2 being synced.

b) Also, once i upgraded that phone to 2.2.1, the problem still didn't happen, so it doesn't seem to be the phone firmware per se, either.

c) The difference between the two machines is a bunch of recently installed libraries.

Which sort of leads up to the same suspicion that Alf353S already voiced... this smells of a DRM-checking bug buried in a recently updated library (maybe in conjunction with changes to iTunes and/or the firmware). Could have started with QuickTime 7.6, could have maybe come with the Media Browser Update - but now we're in the land of wild guesses.

A bit of GOOD NEWS: I've hand-loaded the applications I needed on the phone, and it turns out that a partial sync of applications with iTunes with the exact set of applications turned on that I downloaded on the phone will still sync successfully. This is valuable, as I can now sync my phone with new (non-DRM) media daily and without crashes - while I can still retain the applications I need. Wonder what happens once an application updates on either side. We'll see about that.

Maybe the problem solves before I get into that loop.

Let me throw my hat into the ring. Updated to 2.2.1 a couple days ago. Synced for at least a day or two just fine. I even synced when I got home from work last night. Tried to sync a few podcasts last night before bed and iTunes crashed.

This morning, the iTunes crashing has continued. I've restored my iPhone to the backup, but iTunes still crashes. After the restore, it is trying to sync apps. It will install one app before iTunes crashes.

This is on a Windows Vista PC with iTunes 8.0.2 and iPhone 3G.

Valuable information Nekulturni.

The primary system where I do all my syncing has not yet had the iDVD update nor the iLife Media Browser Update. But I did update Quicktime recently. Since that update I have successfully sync'd my iPhone.

At least in my case my problems started immediately following the V2.2.1 update to the iPhone.

I am a Mac user, but I hear my Windows buddies always moaning about how deeply DRM is embedded in Windows. I wonder how tightly coupled to the kernel DRM is in Mac OS X.

Once this is resolved it should make for interesting reading and discussion.

Its interesting to know that the problem may affect windows boxes as well. As a desperate act I tried copying my iTunes library to a Win7 test pc, but it crashed syncing drmed music just like on Mac. I attributed this to the beta nature of Win7, but Hofferama experienced the same on Vista. Weird. The only common thing seems to be the latest Quicktime update?
