creating new keyboard shortcuts, and modifying toolbar

HI

i'm switching today from microsoft word for the mac to pages and i've been hunting for some of the things that were easy to do in word but i can't find, even trying the help system, how to do them in pages. i apologize if these questions have been answered already 100 times, but couldn't find out how to search the previously asked questions in this forum without going through each page (sorry, i'm 61 and not totally computer literate yet)
Question 1). how do i create new keyboard shortcuts?
Question 2). how do i modify the toolbar, not the one on top that has charts etc on it, but the one under it that has fonts and line spacings etc. i would like to add a button that allows me to easily change the spacing between paragraphs, and another that I can click for the 'symbol' font.
Question 3). is there a way to drag the font color menu down so that it stays open?

thank you all for your time and patience

cheers polly

Creating and modifying keyboard shortcuts in OSX is done in System Preferences:

+Apple Menu > System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts > click on the plus button under the window > Application: Pages > Menu Title: > Keyboard Shortcut > Add+

You need to restart the application and the keyboard will be shown next to the menu item.

I have tried this a few times both in Pages 08 and in the trial of 09, using different keystrokes, but although my shortcut does show in the insert menu of both it simply does not work as a shortcut. I cannot find this shortcut in use anywhere else, including in Word where I have searched through the many pages of shortcuts, so can someone suggest what I should do? No yellow triangles show a conflict. Surely I do not have to search through every application on my HD? The reason I need this is that I cannot set my custom symbol footnote as a preset, so considering that I have to go through the custom footnote dialog each time, it would be good to save a few seconds on a long text.

Best wishes

You read the System's Help which states:

I followed all your instructions and can see the toolbar shortcut in the Pages Insert menu but it does not do anything. There are no yellow triangles in Sys Prefs to suggest a conflict, and none that I could find in the many pages of Word shortcuts which I also checked. Do I have to go through all the applications on my HD? (Surely not!) Is this something that works in Leopard and not in Tiger? I only want to save a few seconds because I have to use custom insert footnotes quite often and unfortunately cannot make presets for them, so in a long text, this would be very useful.

Best wishes

As you may see, the shortcut is installed.

I think the picture you showed gave the clue - and I changed my shortcut from Ctrl+f to Cmd Ctrlf and it worked! I looked in all the menus in Pages and every one of the shortcuts in them contained the Cmd/Apple key. So thanks, somehow the solution is found.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't anticipated a problem because I used the Ctrl + key combination so frequently in Word. It seems so many of us rely on features we learnt in MS Word and forget they may not apply elsewhere!

I don't know, Microsoft products are not permitted to enter my home 😉

May you tell the story of this document?

Is it imported from Word ?

My guess is that the 'styles' aren't 'named styles' but attributes applied as they are by the menus
Format > Font > Bold
Format > Font > Italic

They look the same but they are different concepts.

Named styles are ruled true the styles palette
Other are ruled thru Format > Font > xxx
