creating new keyboard shortcuts, and modifying toolbar

HI

i'm switching today from microsoft word for the mac to pages and i've been hunting for some of the things that were easy to do in word but i can't find, even trying the help system, how to do them in pages. i apologize if these questions have been answered already 100 times, but couldn't find out how to search the previously asked questions in this forum without going through each page (sorry, i'm 61 and not totally computer literate yet)
Question 1). how do i create new keyboard shortcuts?
Question 2). how do i modify the toolbar, not the one on top that has charts etc on it, but the one under it that has fonts and line spacings etc. i would like to add a button that allows me to easily change the spacing between paragraphs, and another that I can click for the 'symbol' font.
Question 3). is there a way to drag the font color menu down so that it stays open?

thank you all for your time and patience

cheers polly

I get the same behavior in Pages '08
if there is no change to the selected item 😉

If I change something (apply italic for instance) the menu item is available.

It's logical.

If the attibutes aren't modified there is no reason to offer tha ability to define a new style from an unmodified one.

To be honest, at firt try I got "this page is unavailable"
so I dropped thinking "if he is unable to give a correct link, it's not my problem".

Then, looking one more time at your link, I discovered that you made a typo

"puplic.me" is wrong.

I edited it as
"public.me" and got a better result.

I downloaded the file, open it and got:

User uploaded file

If you get an other behavior, it's that something is wrong on your system.

(a) As iWork is installed thru an Apple installer with receipts, it may be useful to run Disk Utility to repair permissions.
(b) it may be useful to get rid (trash) the preferences file:

<startupVolume>:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pages.pl ist

(c) it may be useful to open the document from an other user account to see if you get the same odd behavior.
If you get, the oddity is in the commun set of system files.
If it behaves correctly from the new account, the odd item is in your original account set of files.

I'm also trying to switch from Word to Pages, not entirely successfully. The keyboard shortcuts problem is severe (Word's method of allowing the user to customize this is excellent), but a good workaround is to use a third-party macro program, if you can afford it. I've used QuicKeys for years and the latest version (X3) does nicely. It allows you to be a good deal more creative with keystrokes and options than the System Preferences method (which is also very good, just more limited).

And, by the way, the only feature of Word that I don't want is its unreliability and its contribution to Microsoft hegemony. Everything else, I'm used to, alas...

(a) no need to ask twice if I find the problem.
I'm not a slave, I'm not in front of my machine 24 hours a day !
I'm an end user like you.

(b) the difference is that when someone explains me something I take care of what I was said.

I wrote that the item is disabled if nothing was modified in the style
and that it was active if something was modified in the style.
It's what I got.

I clicked the item 2 Akkordstrukturen
then I clicked the style entitled:Überschrift 2
I clicked on the small triangle and the menu item was active.
User uploaded file

I clicked on Redefine…
The look of the Überschrift 2 item changed reflecting the style of the selected piece of text which is the normal behaviour.

No new style created
Only standard behavior.

If you wish, I may write a script removing all the installed styles.
but it seems a bit rude to kill an inexistant problem.

Yvan
I´m sorry if I suggested any wishes.
I just want my problem fixed.
And I really apreggiate your extraordinary help!!
I really do.

May be I´m stupid, but I just wanted to delete the styles Überschrift 1+2!
And this is still not working.

If you could give me a script for uninstalling all styles this would be great, but you don´t have to!!
I know that your work here is free time work and you are not a member of the apple support.
So, again I would say you thank you for your impact.

So the best to you.
Thanks alot
Best wishes
Bernhard
