Can't open Keynote 09 file

I have a file, created in Keynote 09, that I cannot open anymore. I receive the message "Unable to open 'filename' because it isn't a valid keynote document". Same message when double-clicking the file or from the Open... menu. I suspect the file is corrupted as Keynote 09 was behaving strangely when I was editing it (very slow operations). I saved the file and restarted Keynote and that's when the file wouldn't open anymore. I restarted the Mac (MacBook Pro, unibody) and still no luck. I made a copy of the file in the Finder successfully, but I get the same message with the copy. The file can be viewed in QuickLook just fine.
Is there a file repair utility for Keynote 09?

Cheers,
Bill

Same problem. Unfortunately can't help with solution. Using PowerPoint until cause, way to avoid, and fix found.

File created in Keynote 09. I am opening in Keynote 09, not 08. 08 is not on the hard disk anymore. All Apple patches applied. Presentation is not huge (about 20 megs). Lots of HD space left.

Dealbreaker. Feedback to Apple sent. Frustrating beyond belief.

Hi everyone,

Sadly this just happened to me yesterday and 6 days worth of work is in limbo. I have been using Keynote for the past 2 years and never have I encountered something so basic but yet so 'dangerous'. How can I trust keynote now?? Anyway when I looked at the file in list mode, you will notice that the kind column does not show what kind of file it is. Even after I tried several times of changing the extension etc. Still does not work. This is not acceptable, Apple!

Holy crap, what a frickin waste of time. It REALLY REALLY ticks me off being a civilian test bot. Why do these companies release products ( that we PAY FOR ) and then get all of us to find the bugs, write into these discussion boards ( after wasting hours and hours of our time ) AND THEN some of us EVEN lose work as a result! Figure it out MAC. We payed for this.

p.s. Long time Mac user... just got iWork with Keynote 09. 100 hours of work on a visual presentation with slide, video and transitions... saved VERY REGULARLY, backed up on another drive, and poof... gone!

VERY ****** OFF,

Doug.

What was? We try to help as much as we can but aren't mind readers 😉

You've a right to be annoyed with the software if it's ditched so much work. Reality is when it comes to software there +are no+ guarantees (accept a product refund and that's not going to bring your work back). You need a back-up system that works for you, changing a number at the end of the file name every time you save until the project is done is an old school way of having safety net throught the development phase MyFile.5.4.keynote etc etc is one way. There's time machine; there are applescripts to auto save and auto backup floating around on these iWork forums too.

Same problem here so please post any solutions you hear of. I lost about 6 hours of creative work that will take at least as long to recreate.

So much for the trial and so much for Apple's reputation for quality. PowerPoint NEVER let me down like this. I'm still going to try to recover my file and get my work back, but then I am purging KeyNote '09 asap. I'll use a Microsoft product "because they just work."

These are not tech support forums for Apple employees to offer support. Apple rarely posts here. Ring Applecare even if you're not covered with a purchase, if you politely explain you can sometimes get the help you need.

If this has been running since Feb and this is the total number of users with this problem it is not significant from a statistical point of view but I'm sure Apple would want to get on top if this none the less +if it is+ a Keynote and OS X issue.

Unfortunately, there may be 2 or three different problems that we're talking about in this thread, which could add to the difficulty of finding a solution for any one group. I thought I'd run down the list to see if we have a picture of who this is happening to.

The users this is happening to are running the latest OS and app updates. The problem is that when a user chooses to save a file, Keynote goes through the motions and claims to have successfully saved the file. Some time later, the user tries to open the successfully saved file and is unable to. This is mainly happening to users that are using Keynote's new compressed file format. Some have reported getting some kind of warning (general slowness of the system prior to saving) or have noted that they are at the limit of their disk space, either of which could be a precursor to the problem.

I did a search for SFWordProcessing Plug-in and found this link which I hope is useful for one user.

Do we know anything else specific about this issue? The more specifics we have when we report, the more likely it would be able to be repeatable internal to Apple. Has anyone changed their default file format to "Package" to see if the issues go away?

I forgot to mention this, and I think it's highly relevant: I regularly back up when I'm working and I use save-as for each incremental change so that I can back up if I need to. I also use Time Machine. In this case none of the back-ups will open either. They all suffer from the same problem. None of the versions created after saving and agreeing to update to the Keynote '09 file format are readable.
