Can't open Keynote 09 file

I have a file, created in Keynote 09, that I cannot open anymore. I receive the message "Unable to open 'filename' because it isn't a valid keynote document". Same message when double-clicking the file or from the Open... menu. I suspect the file is corrupted as Keynote 09 was behaving strangely when I was editing it (very slow operations). I saved the file and restarted Keynote and that's when the file wouldn't open anymore. I restarted the Mac (MacBook Pro, unibody) and still no luck. I made a copy of the file in the Finder successfully, but I get the same message with the copy. The file can be viewed in QuickLook just fine.
Is there a file repair utility for Keynote 09?

Cheers,
Bill

I can't speak for others, but I have not had any issues with files that were originated in Keynote '09.

My problem has been with files that started as Keynote '06, were opened with Keynote '09, and then saved in the Keynote '09 file format. I did not have problems with these files while Keynote '09 remained open. However, once the Keynote '09 application was closed, these files could not be opened again. I cannot reproduce the problem at will.

I have not had problems with Keynote '06 files that were opened with Keynote '09 and then saved as Keynote '06 compatible files.

So a new facet... As long as Keynote '09 is open, it can open files that, in the future, become problematic. Do you know if there was a system restart inbetween or just quitting the app and restarting? Have you ever quit, restarted, are able to open the slideshow BUT then on the next day cannot?

Have either of you tried changing to the package format to see if all your problems go away?

I have the new update installed and I am still unable to open the affected files.

I won't be able to help determine whether or not the new update prevents the file corruption (Apple's words) because unless the problem can be pinned down and understood, I won't be using Keynote '09 again until enough time elapses without reported re-occurrences to convince me that the problem has been resolved by other updates. The risk is just keep using it for anything time-critical is too high.

After a recent software and firmware update on the MacBook Pro, the presentation I made IN Keynote '09 suddenly would not open! I would receive the error message that I need to reopen the file with a NEWER version.

(How's THAT possible?!)

I forced the computer to "Open With" Keynote '09 and that seemed to solve the problem. Why I had to do this, I don't know - but am glad that it worked.

I experienced the same problem today (lost about 5 hours of work - awesome) and I have done some digging:

If I rename the corrupt file with a .zip extension, then open it, it gives me a folder with the following contents:

buildVersionHistory.plist
QuickLook
thumbs
(and 5 .png files I used in the presentation)

When I create a new file and do the same thing, I get the following:
buildVersionHistory.plist
index.apxi
QuickLook
thumbs

The index.apxi file is an xml document that contains the presentation and it is completely missing from the corrupt file! I am going to try switching over to the "Save new documents as packages" setting and seeing if that helps. At a minimum, it seems we can at least check for the existence of the index.apxi file in the package before we close Keynote...

I believe that file gets eradicated and re-created upon save, so probably best to check for it AFTER save. If it's not there, then keep trying to save as other documents until it saves properly. Also, you could save the file "uncompressed", then you wouldn't have to add a .zip, you could just right click and "Show Package Contents" for a quick check.
