iMovie 09 crashing using Canon EOS 5D Mark II, 1080p files too large?

Constantly crashing; have repeatedly: repaired permissions, restarted, ran latest Disk Warrior. Largest .MOV files 380.6MB, smallest 4.6. The project file size (unfinished) is 6.78GB.
Does that sound beyond iMovie 09's capacity?

I just found this Apple Support Document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2558 which addresses this very problem. That leads me to my next question.

What is the best way to import movies that are present in the iPhoto Movies Event Library? I've never had to import them in the past, they were just there, although there is that step that occurs whenever there are new ones - thumbnail creation or somesuch? Are you supposed to ignore those and do an import from the File menu? What is the "best practice" workflow for the 5D2 then?

I'm curious if that is why iMovie '08 never had problems - it never had the option to import at full resolution.

Thanks...
