Iphone Internationally - In Mexico - Love some Experienced Input..

All,

I'm traveling to Cancun end of this month and want to take my Iphone to do the following only..Use the Hotels Wifi to check facebook and check email and possibly some little impule safari surfing. Do not plan to Text at all nor use the phone at all. My wife is taking her Att NON iphone strictly for calling purposes in emergencies.

Now I've been told Iphone can be tricky as there are a lot of ways to charge you. I know there is a Intl calling plan for 4.99 plus 59 cents a min..Theres also a Data plan for 20mg for $25.00...However if I don't plan to call out, receive calls, Text, or surf the apps or internet on the Edge or 3g dime and only use the phone in WIFI mode from the hotel I as thinking of doing this keep my phone charges to a minimum.

Leave the phone the whole trip in airplane mode which will in essence block any calls to come in and out and send everyone right to VM, it will stop any in or outgoing text messages, and make it impossible to use any data outside of a wifi network such as the hotel. I tested it in airplane mode in my home while wifi was still turned on and it seemed to work great...

Love to hear your opinions all on those that have done this or used iphone internationally.

Other than using the wifi love to use it as a ipod siting on the beach or use the camera when in the city or out and about..This is why I think the airplane mode will keep my charges down to a minimum. I've read that when out on the edge or 3g network everytime it looks for new towers it is using valuable data bytes which will then deduct from my purchased 20mg IF i went that route....

Love your input to my plan on airplane mode....

When I landed back in the states domestically and turned it off airplane mode all the VM's and txts that come thru at once for those that sent while in Mexico shouldn't hot me with intl charges right since I didn't get them til I got back to the states?

Thanks all..
Jeffrey

So all theres no way ATT can detect my phone over in Mexico if I turn airplane mode on on the plane n the states and don't turn back on until I get back to states right?

I just called ATT and the gal was not sure how that would work and she still thought if someone left me a txt or VM or tried calling I may be charged. I don't see how if the antenane is shut off in airplane mode??

Love to hear from anyone whose tried or done this...I mean my ultimate goal is to avoid their voice, txt, or data international plans if I don't need them and just want to use iphone this way...

I used my iphone in cancun for a week last december. I did get the $5 voice plan because I knew I would be making a few call, but I did not get the data plan because I planned on mostly using hotel wi-fi. I turned off data roaming and push, and set fetch to manual to minimize the data costs. I made a few calls and only turned on the data when I wanted to check mail away from the hotel (probably 4 or 5 times per day for a couple of minutes each). That seemed to work well, I think my additional charges for the week were about $100-150 (I didn't notice how much was voice and how much was data). I assume it would be free if you left everything turned off, call ATT to make sure.
