Dragging or moving albums into playlist files

Is it possible to move an entire album into a file or must it be done song by song?

The misunderstanding is all my fault.

I have loaded my CD's into Itunes and they show as albums in MY Music. All of them are there and I would like to split them up to make them easier to find. I ould like to split the albums into different categories.

I hope that this makes sense. I know that I can drag individual songs into playlists but I am looking to get whole albums moved.

Thanks

Last evening I attempted the right click on the album and was given only one option to treansfer the album. "on the go- 1" was the only playlist or file that was an option. I want to transfer the albums in into file or playlists such as RB, gospel, oldies, romance, classics, etc.

Oh, let's start at the top. The iTunes media library is divided into five sections (or sources), Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts & Audiobooks. You can't create more sections and you can't put video in an audio section or vice versa.

You can create your own playlists (File... New Playlist) which can hold mixed media and playlist folders (File... New Playlist Folder) to organise your playlists. The playlists are gathered together at the end of the library listing in the left-hand column.

When looking at the main iTunes window you can select one or more individual items (selecting ranges with SHIFT or toggling items with CTRL), then press down the left-mouse key on part of the selection, drag the pointer to the left hand side and drop onto the name of a regular playlist. All the selected items will be added to the end of that playlist. If multiple items are selected the cursor should include a red circle with the number of items. The files also remain in the source that they come from. If you were expecting them to disappear (as if moved) then that's probably where you are getting confused. As well as working with tracks you can drag the artwork from within the browser, grid or coverflow views in the same way.

I am pretty certain that the sync is automatic. I am not attempting to do any arranging on the ipod, only on Itunes. I was attempting to move the albums that show up in the "MY music" folder and to a particular playlist file so that I would get the individual album and could put similar albums together in a particular playlist.

I hope that this is clear.

When you say the "MY music" folder are your talking about the Windows file folder *<User>\My Documents\My Music*, the bit at the top of the iTunes library that says Music or a playlist folder you have created in iTunes?

What might work for you is to create a playlist folder called e.g. Groups and inside that create some individual playlists for each of your desired categories, RB, gospel, oldies, romance, classics, etc. Create a smart playlist outside of this folder with the rules *Playlist s Music AND Playlist is not Groups*, call is say "General".

If you now look at files in the "General" playlist and drag an album onto say the Classical the playlist, you will find that it magically disappears from the General playlist. Is this what you wanted?

*zippythegrape said:* Yes

Yes to which?

PS I have a terrible habit of immediately editing my posts after posting. Most of the time it doesn't matter as I'm replying to people who aren't online... Earlier I'd chopped out the bit about manipulating stuff on the iPod while you were commenting on it and while you were saying "Yes" I was busy expanding the previous post. Hope it all still makes some kind of sense.

I have been trying to move the albums from the "MY Music" (you mean simply "Music" I think) folder at the top of the list that wa already on Itunes. I am attempting to move the album to an individaul folder that I have set up as a new playlist.

Right, as I said, you cannnot move items out of the "Music" source to somewhere else (other than to the "Audiobooks" source - but that's another story).

+As earlier but with a little editing:+

What might work for you is to create a playlist folder called say, Groups, and inside that create some individual playlists for each of your desired categories, i.e. RB, gospel, oldies, romance, classics, etc. Create a smart playlist outside of this folder with the rules *Playlist is Music AND Playlist is not Groups*, and call it General.

If you now look at files in the General playlist and drag an album onto say the Classical playlist, you will find that it magically disappears from the General playlist. Over time the General playlist will shrink as you organise files into their various categories. You could also make use of smart playlists in the Groups folder if you can create suitable rules to define one of the sections you want to create. Is this what you wanted?
