When I connect iPod (click wheel - 4th generation) to PC, iTunes gives an error message "ipod_1 cannot be synced. An unknown error has occurred (-48). iTunes then freezes. Purchased it 2nd hand on e-Bay and think I may have caused problem by trying to eject through Windows. However, using suggested patch from Microsoft to fix hasd not worked - help!
Thanks - resetting the iPod has helped, I'm not getting error message now. However, itunes still freezes whenever I try to use it. I can't delete from or add music to the iPod.
The patch is at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936824/?www.reghardware.co.uk but this didn't seem to help.
I've now put it into Disk Mode. Took about 3 goes before iTunes would open. Then got previous error message "iPod-1 cannot be synced. An unknown error has occurred (-48)" and program has frozen again. Yesterday, I uninstalled iTunes, did a restore on the PC and re-installed iTunes, but no further forward. Running out of ideas!
Are you using the latest version of iTunes downloaded from Apple?
If so, it appears that the problem occurs when iTunes tries to sync the iPod automatically when it is connected.
To prevent the automatic syncing, run iTunes with the iPod NOT connected. Go to iTunes preferences
Devices tab. Check the box that says +Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods+. Click
OK.
Now connect the iPod. It should not sync and hopefully avoid that error.
At this point, you should select the iPod under DEVICES and use the
Restore button to erase the iPod's hard drive and initialize the iPod's software. Then try syncing it again.
Yes, I'm using latest version of iTunes 8.0.2 I set the Preferences not to sync iPod but it still tries to every time I connect, then I get same error message. However, once when I connected, I got as far as the Restore button, but it froze while trying to carry out the instruction.
I can't close iTunes using Task Manager unless I disconnect the iPod. Also, iTunes won't open if the iPod is connected.
Even if iTunes does not
sync initially, it will still access and connect to the iPod because it has to be shown under DEVICES. Therefore, it seems like just accessing the iPod's hard drive causes this problem.
Does the iPod appear in a My Computer or Windows Explorer Window? If so, I would try to reformat the iPod's hard drive using Windows. Use a
full format instead of
quick. If the iPod does not appear in Windows, put it into Disk Mode first before connecting it.
If the formatting completes successfully, run iTunes and immediately run a
Restore to install and initialize the iPod's software.
NOTE: If you use
Restore with a 4th gen iPod connected by USB, it will ask to be connected to a power adapter as the last step. If you do not have the power adapter that Apple included with these iPods (or something equivalent), you will not be able to complete the
Restore process.
If the formatting process does not complete successfully, the most likely problem is that the iPod's hard drive is faulty. Therefore, any attempt to access it is causing this problem.
I have a similar problem. Christmas gift ipod for son...first time I synched perfectly with this computer, added songs, no problem. Recently tried to add more songs had message of "Ipod in recovery mode must restore"...so I did that successfully removed songs and such and the iPod doesn't show up at all in the Windows Explorer mode or the itunes window. I have removed and reinstalled itunes -- no change, same message. I took the ipod back to the purchase vendor and they plugged it in and it worked...they did not use my USB cord however. Can you help?
