Songs Disappearing from iTunes

I've seen other threads on this marked as answered, but they clearly were not based on the posts in them. At first I thought I was going crazy, or maybe had lost some music when I transferred from my old machine to my new one, but now I have songs I know I bought since moving to the new machine that have disappeared. Not just randomly missing songs, but entire missing albums too. Of course, since backing up my music consisted of simply copying the iTunes folder to an external drive (admittedly lazy way, sure) it happily overwrite the folder as I told it to and thus my backups are missing the songs too. This is complete crap, and is NOT answered as the other threads claim. Even if support allows me to re-download everything (at this point, I couldn't even tell you for sure what I am missing since I don't recall everything I've bought) what stops this from happening in the future? If my hard earned money is just going to vaporize off my hard drive at random when I am trying to play by the rules and be legal, give me one good reason not to just save that money and just start pirating everything? Because as much as I don't like pirating, I don't like buying an entire CD for one good song even less, and I like having stuff I bought simply disappear even less than that.

What is the fix for this problem? If Apple lets me redownload everything, where is the proof this won't happen again? I NEED to have a legitimate answer to this question or you and the music industry can kiss my money goodbye. Limewire will be my new music source.

Seeing 35 pages of iTunes customers experiencing the same problem, think of the money we have all lost as a result. I think its time for a class action law suit to get Apple's attention for a fix. I recently did a print screen of the songs I've lost and since these songs are on credit cards it wouldn't be difficult to prove the loss. Let's get it started!

Too right! For this to happen in the real world a professional has to take the case on their own initiative. Maybe someone fitting the description is present or has passed by this discussion these last 5 years!? I bet there gonna be so many people who will sign in supporting the case. After all this is one of the longest running threads at the forum.

There are a number of legal blogs and bulletin boards and you can probably find law firms specializing in class action suits using Google. Simply go there and post a link to this thread. I figure I've spent somewhere between $6,000 - $10,000 on Apple products and services. The iTunes problem drove me crazy. There are also 4 iPads/iPad minis in our household and I've discovered that any Bluetooth keyboard causes them to freeze since iOS 7 came out. No fix so far.

I've abandoned iTunes for MediaMonkey and Spotify. I'll never buy anything from iTunes again and I've spent over $3,000 there. I still have an iPhone but plan on replacing it this year with a non-Apple product. At some point, I will likely do the same with the tablets.

Hear that whirring sound? It's coming from Steve Jobs' grave.

Wow. I didn't realize this was such a big problem. In the past I've had a handful of songs disappear, I didn't think much of it. Lately though I've been coming across a bunch. Before downloading some new music I thought I check google and see if anyone else had the same issue. I see now that MANY people do and I gather from this thread that Apple doesn't have a solution. I thought I would add my name to the list for whatever it's worth.

In my case, there are 2 scenarios, in one the song/album is listed, but when I try to play it, iTunes tells me it can't be located. In the other, the music doesn't show up in iTunes at all. As best I can tell, this 2nd scenario only affects the albums I've purchased from Amazon in the last year or so. In both cases, the music is no longer in my laptop. I've got (or should say, I HAD) over 85 GB of music and 55 GB of audiobooks. I haven't checked them all, but as best I can tell my audiobooks are not affected. They all appear intact.

I'm not getting rid of my iPods, I like them too much and use one every day, but I am going to check for another program I can use to transfer my music. Even if everything is backed up, it doesn't really matter. Managing your music library shouldn't require constant maintenance and verification, especially after all the time that's been spent building up that library over the years. Deleting items from my computer is a dealbreaker.

This is ludicrous. I've read through all the posts that have arrived since I posted last year and what are Apple doing about it - Nothing. I LEGITMATELY purchased cd's and copied them onto my computer and Itunes and loaded them onto my iphone/ipod. They keep disappearing. What's the point in having an ipod when this keeps happening? I now store my copied CD's on Windows Media Player but I can't sync my iphone/ipod with Windows...........this is so frustrating. All I want to do is carry my music around with me and listen to it.

APPLE CAN YOU PLEASE RESPOND TO THESE PAGES OF COMPLAINTS???

Jan 6, 2014 10:50 AM in response to Chris CA

Can they? is a good question. Apple could fix this, but they won't. We are idiots to think it is a "glitch" or something they "can't quite seem to figure out" they do thsi on purpose. It not a real problem on Apples' part, more a finacial maneuver . The music that tends to go bye bye is stuff that is NOT purchased on iTunes and not taken from a CD but compilations cd's friends have given me and stuff i have found on the internet. All the music on your iTunes goes to back Apple to a filter and they filter out what looks suspect. They tell you they take your music in order to find artwork and songs etc. if there are questions about it it gets deleted. Can Apple fix this? Yes. Will they, No. They want you to re-buy rings on iTunes. in this way they are nit unlike the "Mob"

It's shocking that this thread goes all the way back to 2009. Someone wrote earlier that Apple won't respond to this problem--which I have been dealing with too--because this is a user forum. But it's hosted on the official Apple site!!

At first I thought Apple let songs you ripped disappear so that you would be forced to buy from the Store, but I've lost songs I've gotten there too. So Apple is actually worse than evil--they're stupid.

APPLE FIX THIS!!!!

iTunes is easily the worst piece of garbage it produces, worse than the new Pages even. Apple = the new Microsoft.

Do you work for Apple or something, you seem to be sticking up for them? This is clearly a huge problem for many people, perhaps I'm naive in hoping that there may be some response as so many people are clearly ****** off. As a massive company thought they might be a little more interested in feedback but clearly not. Profits come first, people second. Thanks for your input.

Karen, Ive seen those replies before not at all helpful and alwyas pointing out the Apple point of view; whats happening to peoples libraries is disgraceful and not one person ahs come forward and acknowledged it at Apple, Ive lost lots of music from Cds, but got the reply from someone here it wasnt my right to rip Cds etc etc, always defending the Apple line.

Disgraceful but hey he/she thinks he/she's helping, sadly he/she is not!
