iPod Photo: Poor Sound Quality - Updates

As most of us who have bought the iPod Photo already know, the sound quality IS FLAWED. The distorsion (or background crackling) of high frequency/high output sound (such as piano, high output electric guitar & some deep bass output - however the vocals seem to be fine) is there and something needs to be done about it. Some good examples of where this kind of problem occurs, from what I have found are: Radiohead (most of the OK Computer album), The Hives (the iPod Photo cannot seem to cope with their loud distorted guitar style & very high output), and Incubus (a lot of Morning View). Some people who are still using the tinny, lacklustre stock earbuds, or just don't listen to their music carefully enough, or listen niavely, may still not recognise this.

I refuse to let this issue drop, as I have spent good money on what should be, a technically flawless sound player. I do like this player though (mine is 60GB). The features are good, the photo element is excellent, the 60GB storage is unrivalled, but the main function of the player, to play music, is not good for this one issue. It is so disappointing considering Apple have obviously overlooked this issue (or simply let it slip by thinking nobody would notice), for what is otherwise an excellent piece of equipment.

I record all my music on iTunes, using the MP3 encoder. Some people think the MP3 encoder in iTunes is poor, but it is as good as most. It is all ripped at 224kbps VBR. I use Shure E2c earphones, which are also excellent, and by far the best value for money if you're looking for a warm tone & deep bass in your sound. The step up in price to the Shure E3c might be worth it if you prefer a more detailed, but possibly colder sound.

All that considered, there is absolutely no reason why the sound should be poor on my iPod Photo (when it is fine on the iPod Mini, and using Audio software on my PC), apart from there being a hardware/software glitch. There simply must be. Either that, or something in the sound has been compromised to accomodate the photo elements or colour screen.

I have sent an e-mail to Apple regarding all this, and will hopefully hear from them soon about what is going to be done to resolve this. I will keep this post updated as and when I hear news from them. I also have a case number in motion with their customer services department, and they cannot ignore this anymore.

Something must be done! Redeem yourselves, Apple!

I generally use a Headroom "Total Airhead" headphone amplifier between my 60gig ipod and Etymotic 4P earphones. I'm a bit of a hi-fi nerd and use a very expensive Naim system at home, so am pretty critical of any distortion.
I can't find any fault with the ipod, apart from the obvious compromise from using compressed data compared to tape or vinyl.
I'm sure this is an impedance matching problem between the ipod amplifier stage and some headphones. So just try different phones or use a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Hi
If you read my post, about six back from yours, you will see I posted a reply from Etymotic Research. Who, like me, agree that this is an impedance problem. It probably stems from people trying to squeeze as much volume out as they can by using low impedance headphones. They suggest using there own cable which will raise the impedance.
How do you find the Total Airhead? I am tempted to get one as well, although as I live in the UK repairs will prove a tad difficult. If they are ever needed.

Hi Philip,
Have you tried the Ety 6 and if so is the distortion reduced I am thinking of getting a set I am using Sennheiser PX200 32 ohms at present the distortion is still there but mutch reduced over the Apple buds.
I was also thinking of getting the pocket dock so the headphone circuit would be bypassed but then no volumn controll, any thoughts would be appreaciated.

Hi PT88
Not yet as I am waiting to get the ER4P-24, as suggested by ER in their reply to me, the cable raises the impedance to 90 ohms which they reckon would be high enough to avoid the distortion problems. Although I can get the ER6, ER6i and ER4P's in the UK, I can only find the ER4P-24 cable from the USA. So I have ordered it and waiting for it to arrive. As soon as I have it I intend getting either the ER6i's or maybe even the ER4P's.

Hi. I have been the owner of a 60Gb Ipod photo and a pair of Koss PortaPro Headphones for 5 weeks. I have not noticed any sound quality problems at all. In fact I have been amazed at how good the sound quality is. Having read a number of articles on this topic I immediately ripped some classical piano music and played it on both the Koss Portapros and through both the line output and headphone output to my Bang and Olufsen stereo system. I have heard no distortion up to now. (PS is this an impedance problem? the Koss headphones are 60ohm). For me this product is a revolution and I am very satisfied with Apple.
(PS I have never owned any Apple product before the Ipod).

Just as way of feedback I tried using the two programs mentioned in an earlier post and they screwed my iPod. Whilst the album art was correct when you use the select button 2x/3x, when the track was playing the window displayed incorrect artwork. This happened to all my tracks, like they were jumbled up. Used the restore firmware util and reloaded my tunes ( all 38GB of them ) and it is now fine.

I'm sure its ok with other users but it didnt work with my iPod.

The output stage on the iPod is the problem, it would appear not to like low impedance loads. As I said in one of my previous posts using a pair of Beyer Dynamic DT990 with an impedance of 250 ohms there was no audible distortion. The volume level was OK, I am using a EU level reduced model of iPod by the way. Using something like the ER6i's or ER4P's with the ER cable giving you an impedance of 90 ohms should also give adequate level. Probably not earth shattering, ear damaging volume but perfectly OK for me. Otherwise invest in a HeadRoom AirHead headphone amp, you should then be able to satisfy the most ear shattering levels you could ever want!

The distortion I can hear is only present on the iPod when using low impedance headphones. Those same headphones used on my PowerBook I hear no distortion listening to exactly the same source material. If I use higher impedance headphones on the iPod the distortion goes away. I doubt very much that it can be fixed with a firmware update that I can see.

Hi David
It is very likely that as you are using headphones with a 60 ohm impedance you will not hear any distortion at all, as the impedance is high enough. Use a pair of 16 ohm impedance headphones and you will hear quite nasty distortion. Especially on solo piano music. Piano sounds are made up of a lot of what are called "overtones" these are very susceptible to harmonic distortion in amplifier circuitry.

Hi Phillip

The Headroom Total Airhead allows me to use any headphones with any source at any volume without distortion, and I believe with improved sound too. As previously stated, the 60gig ipod is distotion-free. I like Sennheiser HD650s when sitting at my desk, and the naked ipod can't drive these to a useful volume. The Airhead does easily.
The amp is exactly the same size as the ipod and is designed to be partnered with it. Battery life is not a problem as they never seem to run out unless I leave it switched on in a drawer for about a week.
Portability is less of an issue as I nearly always listen when sitting down somewhere, eg. train, plane, desk, so having the extra box makes little difference.
I ordered mine direct on the internet and they sent it to the UK without any problem. It has been faultless for the two years that I have owned it, but I find US companies very good for repair and service (eg. Etymotic when my earphones broke), the only difficulty is that you get hit for import duty on repairs as well as purchases.
