Powerbook G3 Startup Volume problems

I am using a G3 Pismo Powerbook I bought off eBay. It's a 500 Mhz G3 and it's been upgraded to 1 gig of Ram and a 100 gig hard drive. It came with OS 9 and Tiger installed on it, but I wanted to do my own clean install and I ended up using XPostFacto to install Tiger on it. It runs okay, but the problem is it only boots if I press Option-Command-Shift-Delete during startup, which bypasses the primary startup volume. If I press and hold C to try and boot from a OS 9 CD nothing happends and if I hold Option it hangs on a screen with a refresh button my volume icon and a next button.

Any Ideas?

sean,

It's really quite simple.

Before going to the trouble of hooking everything up, see if your 2 CDs will boot on the "host" computer you will be using. For example, the PB G4 15" Titanium released in '03 was the last powerbook to run MacOS 9.2.2 natively. All computers that can no longer boot into 9.2.2 can still run 9.2.2 inside 10.x in emulation and 9.2.2 is known as Classic in this configuration.

-The host computer must be a PPC that supports both Tiger and 9.x so both the Tiger and 9.x CD you have will boot. With the host computer running...

-Connect the Pismo (target) to the host, then start the the Pismo in FireWire Target Disk Mode (FTDM); be sure you are using a 6-pin FireWire cable.

-As the above tech article describes, the Pismo's HD will appear on the host's desktop and you treat it like it was just an external drive.

-Now load the Tiger DVD in the host and restart; OSX requires the computer be booted to the OSX DVD for installation.

-Immediately go to the Disk Utilities in the menu bar, open Disk Utility, select the Pismo's HD in the left window, then select Erase on the right side. Make sure you have the correct selection...you don't want to erase the host's HD.

-Now quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation. When complete, Tiger will want to boot to the Pismo's HD to finish up. This means the host computer will be using the Pismo's HD instead of its internal HD...this is normal.

-Select the host's internal HD in the Startup Disk panel in System Preferences and restart. You always want to leave the host's startup volume with the correct selection...its internal HD.

-Now load the 9.x CD and restart the host to this CD. All you have to do is select Clean Install.

-Properly unmount the Pismo's HD from the host and shut down the Pismo which is in FWTDM. Now startup the Pismo and see how it runs.

Any questions, please ask.

If the above does not work because you can't boot your CDs, please post back with info on the PPC computer you are using as host...model and installed software.

Well, it turns out it was the optical drive. Despite working fine for watching DVDs, mounting and reading disks the TSST drive was the cause of the problem. I swapped it out for a Sony drive I borrowed from a Dell Inspiron 6000 and I was able to boot and install both OS 9 and Tiger disks with no problem.

Thanks for all the tips and help, jpl. I noticed in your profile that you are using a G3 Powerbook as well. I am going to be starting a new thread and I am hoping you can give me some pointers on my next task with this machine.

sean,

Well, good work. I see you know your way around computers and working with hardware. I am also glad that at least the disks you received work even though the optical drive was not quite up to Apple requirements.

I saw your new post and 'eww' has the answer well covered. The Pismo was top of the line in its day but that was 9 years ago and streaming video is just too much of a hurdle.

I also have a 2002 iBook G3 800Mhz with 32MB of video RAM and YouTube is OK, but if I want to watch Apple's movie trailers, I have to select the smallest window possible, otherwise the video will freeze > jump > freeze > jump all the while the sound goes along on its merry way. I used to wait for the trailer to fully download, then start playback.

I don't know at what point CPU speed, VRAM, and graphics accelerator in powerbooks could handle Internet video streaming without issue, but I also have an early 2008 MBPro and everything is just perfect.

I just got a 400 mhz Powerbook G3 with 128MB RAM. I don't know whether its me or that specific powerbook was designed so that you just can't install an OS on it. I got the Tiger images(dmg) from a torrent site and burned then to CD. when i insert the CD and run the setup file, a screen appears displaying OS X "Tiger" and a button to restart. So i click the restart button but after restarting, nothing happens. And about this XPostFacto, i have downloaded so many versions but they just extract and i don't see any set up. I am using MAC OS X 10.0.4 build 4Q12. can some one also show me the keys to press to get the powerbook to start up from CD. Which button is the command and which is the option. I am seriously new to mac and I have no idea how to get those keyboard combinations.
Thank you

Some of you seem to infer that it is easier to install Tiger on OS 9 than on a previous OS X; is that true? I am trying to install Tiger on OS X 10.0.4 and i can't even get around installing xpostfacto for OS X 10.0.4.....it just extracts and places a folder on the desktop. I have tried so many old versions of xpostfacto. I need help please
