How to watch a PAL region 2 DVD

I'm trying to figure out if I can play a DVD recorded in PAL Region 2 format.

I know I can't play it in my regular DVD player, because it's Region 1 (USA/Canada), not Region 2 (UK/Europe).

But I read that my Mac can play Region 2 disks. It will give me a warning, convert itself to a Region 2 player, and play the thing. If I want to switch back to Region 1 it will give me another warning, and eventually after 5 tries will lock itself permanently to the last region setting.

OK, I understand that part. But what about PAL versus NTSC? I know my TV set is NTSC, but what about my Mac screen? Can it play both PAL and NTSC (an issue separate from the Region Code issue)? I get all kinds of conflicting information when I try to look this up on the web.

Thanks in advance for your help! If this is posted in the wrong forum please let me know.

Yes you can play any DVD from any region on your Mac but I would advise against doing so as it could permanently set your region code in the firmware of your superdrive which after five changes cannot be reversed:

These things are easier in Europe because virtually all DVD players can play DVDs from any region (or can be easily 'hacked' to do so) as well as accepting both PAL and NTSC formats, as do most of our televisions.

I understand that in the US this is not so.

But as far as PAL v. NTSC is concerned on your Mac screen - no problem.
