Filename length

There is a maximum filename length on the mac, do you know what that is, because they are longer than that!

Maybe I could restrict the filename length on the pc, if I knew what that was?

The Mac HFS+ file system allows file names of up to 255 characters. See Table 1

What OSs are the Macs running. If OS X, there shouldn't be any problem. If OS 9, there is a limit of 31 characters.

If you frequently have to transfer files between PCs & Macs, suggest you read the link below to ensure that the file names are compatible with both systems. There may be other characteristics (other than length) in the file names that are causing the read problems.

There's no solution for the problem because your server's OS and filesystem is the determining factor. All you can do is rename your Mac files so that the length of the filename does not exceed the server's limit. Unfortunately, this isn't feasible if you are trying to put OS X system files on the server. In the case where renaming isn't feasible then try archiving the files before transferring them to the server. You can then use a legal filename for the archive. Alternatively, put the files on a disc image file and save the disc image file on the server.

Macs can have filenames up to 255 characters, but depending upon the server's filesystem it may be restricted to 32 characters. Also, there are characters you can use in a Mac filename that are illegal in Windows/DOS and vice-versa. For example Mac filenames can use "/", "?", "|", etc. in filenames but these characters are illegal on the non-Mac server. Similarly, you can use the ":" in a filename, but it's illegal on the Mac.
