Hacked, Cracked and Jacked?

hiya folks, I reckon my current situation is worthy of discussion, it's not that i wish to ask a specific question rather to explain whats up with my imac internal hard drive. at the moment everything appears to be working well however that was not the case a long 12 hours ago, back then i had completed a session where i had managed to record a music stream from an itunes internet radio station, to enable the successful recording of stream i first had to download and utilize audacity and soundflower, right? so job done i click on hard drive window to turn off specific programs and thats when i noticed that screen icons were not responding to mouse clicks, whaaat? then icons disappeared from hard drive window, tried to locate programs through finder and received message "cannot locate volumes" or similar, then when i tried to use items in the blue apple menu again no response from "about this mac","recent items","forced quit","restart","shut down" buttons were mute upon clicking, hmmm i tried all i could for 3,4 hours and opted to go for reinstall of OSX 1, i put the startup disk into the drive and guess what?..... nothing happens!tried it 3 times and nish nada niente nothing, finally i turned off the computer with the rear power button, now here is the interesting part, upon turning the computer back on i quickly inserted the OSX 1 disk...this time the disc icon came on screen and the chance to install but hey hang on, now upon checking things seem to be suddenly automatically back to normal functionality, so if there is a question to be asked here i think it would be do you think my problems arose from malicious code, system malfunction or what? if the cause was viral then there may be all manner of nasties lurking in the background, watching..waiting. so a reinstall looks very likely indeed. what do you think folks?

Hi scrumpai, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Doesn't sound like any of the few Hacks for Macs. How full is Your Hard Disk?

Try this, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...

"first had to download and utilize audacity and soundflower"

Since the problems started immediately after installing Audacity and Soundflower, this is most likely an incompatibility issue rather than malicious code. If you go to the SoundFlower download on the Apple site: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/soundflower.html you will see this information just below the download link.

"Apple is providing links to these applications as a courtesy, and makes no representations regarding the applications or any information related thereto. Any questions, complaints or claims regarding the applications must be directed to the appropriate software vendor."

You need to contact these software vendors or try deleting the applications from your hard disk.
You can get AppDeleteAppDelete will not only delete the application(s) but also remove all associated files.

hello and thanks for suggestions...
however i must clarify events in that i successfully installed and used audacity, soundflower, and lame for well over 4 hours with impressive results(in quality) was able to convert to MP3 and install on to the ipod shuffle(sounds fantastic) all working well. It was indeed when i was shutting down operations that i noticed a rare sound coming from the back of the computer, you know though i am still a bit noobish around the edges i tend to find it strange to hear hard disk activity going on dispite having stopped all running programs, the final step in shutting down was to click off the modem from the hard drive window but no response. thanks to suggest appdelete, i am sure to use it should i encounter such problems again.

hi, i performed the apple hardware test and no problems were detected, so overall things are looking good, So Far So good, Now my intention is to do it all again, that is to use the same tools to record the same audio stream however apart from the audio quality i wish to understand what is happening inside the computer should the same problems arise. previously i had endeavored to gain clues from the console log but hey so many logs to decipher? can you recommend what to look for should difficulties arise? cheers.
