Airport Extreme Website block..

OK, I've got one for somebody smarter than me out there ( a lot i'm sure).
I have an airport extreme (n) and there is one particular website that I cannot access through the extreme, but if I pull the airport out and hook up directly to the cable modem I can get to this website. What gives? I get a warning like this:
Access Denied

You don't have permission to access "http://www.choicehotels.com/?" on this server.
Reference #18.72b1208.1234794491.13f1c1a

I went through earthlink and we determined it has to do with the airport..

Oh, the website is www.choicehotels.com

I have been able to access this up until about 3 weeks ago..

any helpful ideas?

Thanks

Hi,
Two things....
1. You can go to the site below to access the websites that are blocked on your computer.
http://anonymouse.org/
Click on the English flag, and then type in the website you are trying to reach, and it will take you there. (Unfortunately it seems that this is now one of the websites that my Airport is blocking).
2. Call your Apple store, point them to all of these posts, and insist that they replace your Airport. There is obviously some kind of glitch, and it needs to be resolved. If they won't agree to replace it, keep asking for the person above them.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I have wasted too much time on this with Apple, My internet supplier, and my website host. Apple will try to resolve the problem if everyone starts asking for replacements.

I am now on my third router that has developed this problem.

Basically, it seems to be a bug with the AE and routing tables. If you initiate too many simultaneous connections to a single site, it will eventually screw up the routing tables on the device and no longer allow access.

If the firmware, etc. were more open, it would be an easier thing to get to the bottom of, but it seems to be either preventing you from overwhelming the device, or just a simple bug in the firmware.

My first two AEs were connecting to a single server to check 6 different email addresses every 10 minutes. They each died within two weeks.

When I brought this down to three addresses, the third router survived for over three months until it died today. The only thing that fixes the issue is replacing the router. It doesn't seem to be a part of the device that is updated when you refresh the firmware.

Sorry to bear bad news, but I have to call and get mine fixed again myself.

Same problem with 2 of my time capsules

I just discovered this thread and I have the same problem. I have an airport extreme and both a G5 and a MacBook Pro. I have not had this type of problem every....until this weekend. I now have no access to my web hosting company. After hours of troubleshooting with the web host company and my cable internet provider this is what I know.

The problem is limited to all my websites hosted by this one company. Although I can go to the control panel I am unable to manage files or ftp.

the problem started when I had multiple sites going into this IP address. I had sometimes a couple of windows open looking at my directories and moving files around. At the same time I had a site open where I could generate photo galleries of photos I had uploaded into the web space. This site generates html that once inserted into something it will generate a gallery of pictures. I had garage sale open, into which I inserted this html code to upload the listings to ebay. So I would produce the code for the listing, paste it into garage sale, view it, and upload to ebay and view it there. So at one time I was directly logged to my webspace, the pictures were on the space and this gallery generator site was accessing those pics, at the same time garage sale was accessing them and when uploaded to ebay, that was generating it. Sometimes I left and came back to work and forgot something was open and I reopened my connection to the web space. All of a sudden, I was unable to log on at all. I could get on every site on the internet but my own was blocked.

After much trouble shooting i found that if I plugged my cable directly on the laptop I was not blocked. The blocking, by the way happened on the G5 also, which I had not even used for this. I took my laptop to the library and via wifi I was able to get to my site. My iPhone also had the problem logging on while on wifi, but if I went thru ATT 3G no problem.

It is clear that the problem is with the airport and a hardreset does not fix the problem. I would like to know if there is a fix. Getting another airport extreme seems very silly to me since this problem can obviously happen again.

I would appreciate any fixes. Using the anonymouse is not viable because you have to buy an upgrade in order to manage files within a secure or encrypted site (so file managing can't be done with the free version).

I'm so glad I found this thread - I was going absolutely mad. I haven't been able to reach my own website for two days - www.guestfilms.com. All other websites pull up fine. I was busy pushing updates via ftp to the site a couple days ago and all the sudden could not reach it from home via my AEBS. Plugging my MBP directly to the cable modem works fine, and I can also visit the site when I'm on any other WiFi network (work, coffee shop, etc.). I've done several factory resets on the AEBS, downgraded the firmware, etc. etc. I really don't want to buy a different brand of wireless router as I have an Airport Express that's extending my network on the other side of the house. I'd go ahead and spring for a Time Capsule, but I don't want it to brick in a month because of this issue.

Wow. First off skip to the end of my rant if you want to know how mine was fixed, like everyone else, I'm so glad I found this forum before I went one step too far telling off my ISP & Server Host. All along it was Apple that I should have saved my wrath for.

That being said, I was stuck in the same quagmire as everyone else. I'm a Web Designer and was testing a site so I was accessing the server repeatedly within a short amount of time. Then ka-boom, couldn't access the server through FTP or HTTP with my AEBS. After exhausting conversations with my ISP & Server host, I did what I should have done in with square one, google the problem, which brought me to this forum & misery loves company.

So I took my AEBS into the Genius Bar, it was out of warranty but worth a shot, so I told the guy about the problem and we hooked it up and...it worked. Of course, the Genius of course was more than happy to send me on my way. But low and behold, I get back home...the problem is still there.

This brings me to the fix this morning:

I was able to access the blocked server through my AEBS via an ethernet cable, so it's just wireless that seems to replicate the problem. I was testing the server with a few changes, then I was uploading a few files and left my computer plugged into the AEBS and connected to the FTP server. I was gone for about a half hour, when I came back. I unplugged the computer from the AEBS and connected via wireless.

Holy Crap, it worked. I emptied my cache, restarted my computer everything I could think of to make sure this wasn't a false positive. But, son of a gun...it's been able to access the site all day, no problem.

So, there ya go...I have no idea if it will work for anyone else, but it worked for me and it sure is nice to be wireless accessing a needed site again.

Man. Super frustrating. Opened an apple support case, and basically, they say they can't do anything since it's only one site. They are unwilling to actually look into it more. I've had this problem for over a year now. It went away once, but it's back, same site. You can traceroute, ping, but telneting to the IP on port 80 gets a timeout.

Apple needs to step up.

Me too. I have one financial website that I used to access often that is now blocked from BOTH my Apple laptop and iMac, using both Firefox and Safari, whether using the wireless Airport Extreme OR even plugged directly into the Ethernet cable coming out of the U-Verse modem. My iPhone can still get there using the AE, and I can use the mentioned http://anonymouse.org to get there too (Thanks).

It appears that the glitch somehow corrupts the computer's ability to get to the URL for good.

How can this be?

May 5, 2010 7:26 AM in response to Charles Mckee

I'm having exactly the same problem since the last 24 hours, and only with LinkedIn.com ! I am behind an AirPort Express, have tried reset, on/off with the NAT, etc., etc., but no luck. If I connect directly with the cable, I can access with no problem.

I tried the URL that is posted herein above, and I can access that site with no problem. Another interesting factor, is that is also seems to be browser related. Sometimes I can access 3 or 4 pages via Safari, but then it locks me out again (I get an error page telling me that the server of the site is not responding). If I try Firefox, I can get no access at all, but if I try using Google Chrome, I can usually get access (not all of the time however), but with a very long wait for the page to open.

I have no idea where to go from here. My AE is not in warranty, and where I live in Italy, I have no easy access to an Apple Store. This is really strange, as up until 24 hours ago, everything was working fine.

Breath a sigh of relief....... Eureka, it is really good to find this posting as I have the very same problem. Such a lot of wasted time and money and as others have said, blaming ISPs and Hosting Companies. Thank goodness I still have an old USB modem to verify the problem I have which is identical to the others posted.

I would also add that this happened first to me a week ago when it became apparent I could not access my mail server which is hosted by the same company as my website, but some months ago in Feb 2010 when I upgrade my Extreme to the latest firmware update, the box then would drop its wireless connection every 15 minutes or so. Just put up with it but it meant that Time Machine which I was running successfully over wifi was not completing.

So, as I am out of warranty I guess it is off to buy a non Apple router instead. Any advice on what we should collectively do, perhaps set up an anti Apple website to get some action? It this occurs with Time Capsules being sold now along with Extreme, you would think Apple would like to fix the problem pdq.

Same nightmare here. It seems to be the Airport Extreme base station. It was blocking one particular server (which houses a couple websites, including email service). Mac mail was set to check for new messages every 1 minute on 2 email accounts... Did it fry the airport extreme base station?

My web server actually did block my IP address for a bit because of all the mail request checks. We verified it was unblocked (was able to access the server w/ out the airport extreme, just plugged directly to the cable modem). Put the AE back into the mix and no luck, ***???

Tried unchecking / checking NAT port mapping and no luck. Super frustrating!

I'm going to try pluiggin into the AE with a cable and not use the wireless network as some have suggested. This seesm like the last possible hope, otherwise it's gonna be off to get a new router.

Turn on the Guest network.

Lightening took out my Extreme, the new one (latest model) wouldn't let any network client access the websites or the mail server on the Mini. The Extreme is configured with port forwarding pointing to the Mini.

So, now we've got two (2) active networks, the original now has a hidden name, it's only serving the Mini.

All our clients and iPhones are on the Guest network, and they all can get to the websites and mail server from there.
