Help my wife use the iPhone 3G in her BMW

I am taking a lot of heat for the new iPhone 3G that I got my wife. She has Bluetooth set up in her BMW, and it works fine with her phone. Problem is, with her old phone she had keys assigned to her frequent contacts, so she could just touch a key, say, and the call would come up through her car.

Now, she has to slide on the iPhone, press the button to pop up her Favorites, and then pick from a list. Also, a quick finger touch does not always initiate the call. (She is driving, after all, when she is doing this.)

She could use the voice recognition feature of her BMW and go through each digit - a pain since now she has to include even her local area code.

I know, in the larger sense of what is going on in the world, this may seem facile to some. But her old phone did this one thing very well. Any (positive) suggestions?

Thanks,

The iPhone only supports hands free bluetooth profile. What this means is that it only supports functions of bluetooth headsets. No stereo, no file transfer, no voice recognition, etc.

There are many other Bluetooth functions, and the iPHone only supports one of them. My guess is that the BMW uses other functions to work its magic and the iphone does not support these other functions.

Check with BMW or a BMW forum for confirmation, but remember that the iPHone only has the most basic BT capabilities.

Actually, there is no problem with the Bluetooth here. It works, i.e. the car and iPhone are in synch.

The problem is the mechanical aspects of dialing a "Favorites" call on the iPhone. "Too many notes," as the Emperor told Mozart. Too many steps, while you a driving a car.

I guess the ideal situation would be someway to assign a shortcut name or number, so my wife could say "Call Dave" instead of "Call 804 xxx-xxxx" Either into the iPhone or the BMW.
