"unknown error 1202" / cannot restore

The iPhone I'm trying to work with will show nothing on its screen other than the USB, arrow, iTunes screen. at all. I can get iTunes (8.0.2) to recognize it, but it then tells me that I can't do anything because it's in "recovery mode" and I need to restore it. OK, I click on restore, it goes through the motions, but at the very end I get a pop up error message that reads "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1012)." I tried this twice, primarily to get the wording of the error message.

Any ideas? <Edited by Moderator>

a few things to try,

ensure you're using a USB2.0 port, not on a hub.
close and reopen itunes.
restart your computer.
uninstall and reinstall itunes.
try to not have any other programs running as you're restoring.
if you have power settings set on your computer (ie- standby, turn off hard disks, after a certain amount of time), disable them before you start the restore.

using a port; tried all 4 ports on the laptop.
tried closing/reopening iTunes
restarted the compuer computer.
uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, have the current version.
no other programs running (straight from startup)
no standby/sleep mode/screen saver

IPhone is still not cooperating. Still getting the same error mesage after it acts like it's restoring.
