iTunes Library cannot be saved (Error -54)

Hey guys,

Recently started getting the following error "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-54)."

I've searched the forums and Google, but can't seem to find a solution which fixes the error and which does not delete my ratings and playcounts.

Any help appreciated!

Have you already tried this:
Go to iTunes, "file", choose export library. Save the library.xml file on your desktop. Quit iTunes, delete the library files in the iTunes folder. Relaunch iTunes, go to "file", click on import library and choose the library.xml file.

Hello.

I experienced this problem after installing the new iTunes 11.1.5 update.

After reading some of the posts on this thread, I started looking for video-files in my iTunes library. I found some old movie-trailers, I should have deleted years ago (seriosly, who wants to watch the trailer for "Terminator Salvation" now? 😝). I deleted them and the problem was immediately solved.

Somehow the video-files prevented iTunes from updating the library, and the update wouldn't take effect. I guess I was lucky, finding the corrupting files so fast. If you experience this problem, good luck! It really isn't a fun problem when you have +5K tracks, all with ratings, EQ, artwork and playlists.

Time Machine can get handy very fast.

I followed Annalea's solution and found lots of errors that were fixed, but the error persisted. I happend to notice that each time I clicked on Safari to read this forum, (and Itunes was running) I got the error. So I closed all my programs and apps and rebooted. First thing I did when I came back up was run the disk utility again. Sure enough it found one more error which was in Safari. I repaired that one and now I seem to be good.

So if tyou follow the disk utility permission repair intructions, it might be a good idea to do it after a fresh reboot and as few other programs running as possible.

Good Luck !

Hi RAIZIN,

The instructions I left are for Macs. I'm not sure where you would find disk permission repair in Windows 8 . . . the last Windows operating system I used was WinNTPro. (I was a die-hard holdout when WinME, etc., came out.)

I would say you might want to Google it. I'm sorry that I don't know off-hand for you. Maybe someone else here will?
