NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception!

I have the error above on the intel iMac 24" when running Second Life.

Error lines from syslog can be:

avalon-3 kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x3 = Fifo: Unknown Method Error
avalon-3 kernel[0]: 0000000b

and

avalon-3 kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error
Feb 23 01:53:22 avalon-3 kernel[0]: 0000000b

If this happens SL is going to freeze up and die

Hardware failure?
OSX bug?
Application bug?

iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.6), NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

Hi Jorge,

I recommend you to go again to the Apple Store and show this thread to them.

I think it is a barefacedness that the won´t repair your notebook.

This cannot be happening on a machine that costs over 2000 $.

Maybe you should go to some different stores to explain the problem.

Maybe you´ll find one store that will do the repair for free.

Good luck!

Hi, got a new logic board yesterday. The channel exception failure is gone, but now the new logic board causes another graphics failure. When ever i start with something on the mini display port connected, i got green rhombs over the whole screen. Now logic board number 3 is on the way. 3th replacement is scheduled for next week. In my opinion, the whole 2010er 15" series has a construction failure, that causes this graphics issues. I´ll keep you posted.

@Jim Tsigros,

I found a solution and it is working fine with me on my mid 2010 i5, I deleted the Apple Power managent KEXT inside the extensions folder, and now I have auto switching enabled, and no more halt at the login screen or what so ever.. everything is working fine...

You can simply copy the original file as a backup incase anything happened, so you can put it back, but actually I had no problems at all. Waiting your feedback..

Champion !

That did the trick !! My machine dosnt kernal panic at bootup if automatic graphic switching is enabled.

I have also check using gfxcardstatus to switch between the two cards to verify and still no problems.

Everytime I kernal panic'd I got those:

11/02/12 3:23:31.000 PM kernel: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error

11/02/12 3:23:31.000 PM kernel: 00000069

11/02/12 3:23:31.000 PM kernel: 00000069

11/02/12 3:23:31.000 PM kernel: 00000069

11/02/12 3:23:31.000 PM kernel: IOVendorGLContext::ReportGPURestart

... then kernal panic and reboot !

Now they dont show up.

So I think at least in my case it may have been software related.

This was driving me nuts !

Thanks for the advice.

Just for info:

OSX 10.7.3

Mid 2010 Macbookpro

2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

Hi,

I tried with the recomendation of Adel Sabry (Feb 11, 2012 8:25 AM), but in a different way and, at the moment, it appears that I have no more crash related with NVDA(OpenGL) messages.

What I did was the following.

1. I have extracted the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext* from OS X Mountain Lion (10.8 Preview). If we compare the version of it with such at Mac OS X 10.7.3, are differents (at least in my system).

Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3: 100.12.42

OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 (Preview): 100.12.53

I have seen differences too, between my equipment (MacBook Pro Mid. 2010) and one MacBook Air Mid. 2011 (comparing Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 in both), with different versions in this files and another related with power.

2. I deleted original AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext from /Sytem/Library/Extensions/

3. I installed the version 100.12.53 using Kext Wizard (http://www.osx86.net/view/2057-kext_wizard.html). There is another option from Groths.org (http://www.groths.org/?p=571).

4. Restarted.

With this option, anyway, I cannot see now AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext in the list of extensions at System Information. May be another way not to delete it before...

I don't know if it is the best way, a correct way or a permanent solution. I just put it in the forum.

Best.

* /Sytem/Library/Extensions/

PS: Intead the installation, the "solution" may be the deletion of the original file... I don't know.

I left the 100.12.53 version here: http://i.min.us/iyWnzid1dEljr.zip

@Jorge Castillo S.: Any success so far not having kernel panics by replacing the kext file?

Hi everyone, till yesterday I'm reading through all these posts and articles affecting the MBP Mid-2010. And sadly I'm also affected. I already installed gfxCardStatus to monitor the used gfxCard. In my case I cannot exactly blame the swichting process, having some kernel panicks in inconspicuous situations. For example yesterday I just enlightened my MB after turning the screen off while it downloaded a file. Without explicitely selecting the open finder window I tried to move a file in there and bam, the almost each and every day seen black screen appears.

I installed the MBP video update from here for Lion http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088, hoping it prevents some crashes. In respect of the warranty I'm not sure whether my MBP would fail that mentioned test and I would have the extended warranty. On the other side, having read many posts from you, replacing the logic board seems to fix the issue in some cases. But honestly I'm not sure whether I got the nerves to first having to discuss my warranty extension with apple and afterwards having my logic board exchanged twice. Like you all I'm really disappointed in Apple and their missing participation in this discussion about that issue!

my crashes:

- kernel panicks during startup

- kernel panicks during usage of MBP

- endless white-screen on shutdown

my data:

MacBook Pro 15'' i7 (Mid-2010)

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

Revision ID: 0x00a2

ROM Revision: 3560

gMux Version: 1.9.21

OS X Lion 10.7.3

(upgraded to Lion from SL 10.6.8 hoping to get rid of these crashes)
