NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception!

I have the error above on the intel iMac 24" when running Second Life.

Error lines from syslog can be:

avalon-3 kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x3 = Fifo: Unknown Method Error
avalon-3 kernel[0]: 0000000b

and

avalon-3 kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error
Feb 23 01:53:22 avalon-3 kernel[0]: 0000000b

If this happens SL is going to freeze up and die

Hardware failure?
OSX bug?
Application bug?

iMac 24" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.6), NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

Hello All

Apologies for my desperate attempt to revive an old thread. My MacPro 1,1 cannot boot up via the normal sequence only to Safe Mode. I have done a fresh install of Snow Leopard, but I always get the grey screen and spinning wheel of death when I try startup.

Logging into Safe Mode then going to the console log I have noticed lots of these:

kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x2 = Fifo: SW Method Error

kernel[0]: 00000069

Could my graphics card (NVIDA 7300 GT) be at fault here?

Thank you

I also have the same issue with macbook pro 15" mid 2010

it keeps freezing when this happens.

People need to pay attention. This is the only solution that worked for someone I was trying to help who cannot afford to buy a new computer or experiment with replacing video cards. I had actually narrowed my goal to removing Nvidia drivers since I know they don't load in Safe Mode, but I was nervous about which ones were safe to remove, since I didn't have physical access to the box (I was afraid she might even lose Safe Mode). Based in this recommendation, I felt comfortable proceeding. It worked like a charm. I'm sure she can't do any serious gaming (no OpenGL after driver removal), but she seems to be able to use her composition software and watch youtube videos without any problem. I really appreciate this solution, agrantfan. More people should pay attention to your post!

in response to bulletproof.

I had the same issue. It was related to my NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card.

My fix:

I navigated to /System/Library/Extensions and moved all the files starting with NV and GeF to a backup directory on my desktop, then used Kext Wizard option "System/Library/Extensions" to Repair Permissions and to Rebuild Cache, then rebooted.

The computer restarted with no gray screen and no more NVDA(OpenGL) log entries.

I recommend that you try this.
