I have had my Macbook Pro since early November. Recently when picking it up, shifting positions or sometimes typing, there has been creaking/cracking noises. It is really annoying. I was wondering if this is a wide spread quality issue or what.
I've got it too now. Started happening about a week after using my new 15" MBP 2.66Ghz i7 with 500G SSD. I sprung for the SSD because my last Core 2 Duo MBP was too dang noisy. Grrrr....
I took my brand new MBP (SSD) in to the Bellevue Square Apple Store and got the worst Genius Bar service ever. The "Genius" handed me a screwdriver and told me to do it myself, after insisting that the "tink" noises were within the design of the computer.
A couple calls in to Apple Support and a visit to another Apple Store and now they're shipping me a brand new MBP as a replacement. I have had nothing short of excellent customer service from Apple with the exception of that complete idiot at the Bellevue Square location.
FIXED! I bought a 15" MBP 2 weeks ago and noticed that when I had the laptop on my stomach, it would make that annoying metally type noise. This should happen on a $2,400 laptop. I did my research - someone on this forum posted that there are springs above the battery. I had my brother open laptop to check it out. To make long story short, the springs were there and they were rubbing against the bottom plate. So, we put a small piece of electrical tape where it was rubbing, and whala, fixed! I'm so happy. If anyone needs help doing this, let me know.
I just bought a $4000+ MBP (got the SSD) and it made the noise. After trying to fix it I ended up getting it replaced by Apple. I was very happy with the customer service I received over the phone. But.... the new MBP does the noise as well! Not as bad as the last one, but still noticeable.
One thing I want to caution you guys on is that those small springs also serve the purpose of grounding the internal components. So, putting electrical tape or removing them removes that grounding function that was built into the design of the MBP, according to the Apple tech support rep I spoke with over the phone. So, be careful!
I spoke too soon. Over the past couple weeks the noise has increased and now the new MBP does it just as much as the last one did. Ah well, I guess I'll have to either get used to it or start listening to music while I work.
I have the same creaking on my 17" MBP.
Took it to the apple store, they couldn't fix it. Apple say the issue is under investigation so they wont do anything.
Its not good for a laptop that costs this much, and the speed at which the issue is being investigated/resolved seems pretty poor too
I would discourage those kind of modification advices ..There are no springs underneath the bottom cover however there are tiny pins all over that do touch the bottom cover and these are thermal sensors for various temperature readings that the machine uses to ***** heating problems
My brand new 15in MBP is doing this also. I've just had it for a week today, but I have noticed this for at least 5 nights. It happens when I'm laying in bed with it on my chest. Before reading this thread I thought it was coming from the trackpad, but now I realize it's coming from the bottom in the center. I was considering taking it into Apple, but now that I see that some of you have done that and nothing has been fixed, what is there to do? It drives me INSANE!!
its a pretty simple fix actually... once you take off the bottom plate... all you have to do is reinsert the screws in a star pattern...
what i did was press down on the center to check is the creaking noise was still there as I insert each screw... and when i was done, no more creaking noise!
this is the original thread where i discovered the fix... hope this helps!
The one and only fix is removing the offending "spring" (it's actually a grounding point and is NOT a thermal sensor as stated above). It is not electrically connected to the MB in any way.
I have no idea if it voids the warranty, but there was no way I could use it in that condition. Four months squeak free!
Anything with "tightening the screws" is just masking the problem. Metal on metal will squeak.
Mine started doing this as well after about a week of use. Its been doing it for the last 4 months now 😟 is there any word of a fix yet, Apple? Exactly the same symptoms (only when heats up, worse when used on lap, same noise etc)
I've noticed my 15'' macbook creaking as well. I was told by a Genius at an Apple Store that it's due to moving parts in the computer. It's a somewhat unsatisfying response, but I think I can live with it for the time being.
